Be it known that I, Hanni M. RADCLIFFE,l a citizen of the United States, residingat Irvington, in the county of vEssex and State of 5 New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic `vFeed for. llutton-rlttaching or other Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be n rull, clear, and exact descriptionofthe invention,
x'o such as will enable others skilled in the art to 'which it appertains to make and usel the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this ,x5 specification.
zo previous to the assembling of the shell and 4o struction of feed the back-plate and its post into n complete button firmly attached to the material, and
which may also be used for similarly feedingVv other small articles or parts of a similar uature such as rivets, eyelets, washers, nuts, or disks of the various shapes-to other parts of machines used in the various arts.r y
My present invention therefore has for its principal objects to provide a. practical and cilicient feeding device or attachment for button-machines or for any other machine or apparatus in which small parts are placed in a hoppervor other suitable receptacle from which the parts are fed one at a time to other parts of the machine or apparatus to vbe assembled'into a complete article of manu- 1 facture or to be attached to some other article, as an article of weer.
The invention therefore consists in the conhopper or receptacle for butfor machines for use for various other purposes; and the invention consists, furthermore, in the combinations and constructions of the various parts hereinaf- 5 ter more fully described and then finally embodied in the clauses of theclaim, all with a view of providing a convenient and practical feeding device for the purposes stated.
The invention is clearly illustrated inthe ton-machines or 5o vaccompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a side view of a portionA of a button-attaching machine provided with a.
feeding dev-ice embodying the principles my present invention. Fig. 2 is atop or pla view of the feeding device or hopper. Fil` 3 is a central longitudinal section of the sam Fig. i is n transverse vertical section takt on line 4 4 in said FigQ; and Fig. is a pl: 'view of a portion `of the feeding device hopper, representing one form of mouth outlet from the hopper to a delivery-chute raceway employed in connection therewith l Similar characters of reference are e1 ployed in all of the said vien-sto indicate ci responding parts.
As has been stated, this invention is to provide device or hop-per which may be used with i rions constructions of machines, but whis especially adapted for use -in connecti with any construction of button-machu for feeding Veither the shell of the button the bnckplate with the post to be for: through the material to that part of the n chine where said parts are secured in th assembled positionsas complete buttons up the cloth or garment.
In practice in button-machines ltwo ln pers or feeding devices are usually employi one from which the shells are fed and I other from which the back-plates and th posts are fed. I n the drawings herewith eornpau-yingl have represented but one h per or feeding device, since the general e struction and arrangements of the parts each hopper are alike, the only ditl'erence ing in the shape of the discharge-opening the hopper, the said opening conforming general outline to either the' general con uration of the shell of the button or to general configuration of vthe combined ha plate and post, or such opening may be any other shape in its cross-section, ace( ing to the shapes of the parts which are t'c fed into the racewaypwhich is connected v the discharge-opening of the said feeding vice or hopper. v
In the said drawings the reference cha vter 1 indicates any suitable stand or t: which is provided with any form of opera1 mechanism for securing' the parts of the l ,ton in their assembled and operative I tions upon the cloth. Secured upon stand or table 1 is a standard or foot '2,
the main purpose n novel feedi '45 the said iinnges S and i).
standard or foot preferably forming a part of the feeding device or hopper by being cast integral with one of the sheils' or sections of the hopper or by being secured thereto in any 5 other suitable and convenient manner. The said hopper or feeding device is indicated by the reference character 3, and it consists, esse'ntinlLig-of n pair of side shells or sections 4 and 5, the said shells or sections being; relo spectively provided with the inwardlytnpering or other snitablyformed bottom portions G and and with theonter marginal nml preferablysexnieircnlnry formeilorshaiwd flanges S and il, snixstan'tinlLv ns illustrated. The I5 said side shell or section 4 is connected with the -sairlstnminrd or foot t. bylwixigrast in vtegral therewith or by being secured thereto in any other suitable nimmer. Arranged bef tween the oppositeiy-locnted ilnt surfaces of :o the said flanges S and il is n correspondinglyshnped member or plato 10, which is'provided with holes ll, corresponding with similarlyiocnted holes in tho llnnges and il for the reception of the nsnal screws or bolts 12 for :5 rigidly and securely connecting: tliese'pnrtsin llieirnssem-bled positions when the said screws or bolts l2 are tightened. From an inspection of Figs. I5 and it will be'seen that the inner edge portion 130i the said plate 10 is nmdein 3o the present caso with apairof forwardly-extending fingers or projections 14, having n rocess i5 between theimihe said parts Hand 15 being of any desired shape as muy be selected and forming suitable guide [ortho article 35 or part to be fed into the racewny ordeliverychute 16. In like manner there is secured between the remaining flat surfaces of the said flanges Sand 9 an arc-slinped member or plate 17, the said member or pinto being pivgo olaiiy secured in place between the said flanges upon a screw or b olt 1S, sind the said nicxnberor plate li' having an elongated hole or opening 1li, so as to becapable uf an oscillatory motion upon a' pin or bolt .20 between Thus it will be seen that. before the screws or bolts 1'2, 18, and 2O are tightened the said plate or member can be properly adjusted to bring its inner curved end portion 2l closer toor farther 5o away from thoparts 14 and .l5 of the plato 10, whereby they delivery-mouth cnn be made smaller or larger, and the hopper is practical for use in feeding various sizes or shells or other similar parts. After the member or 55 plate 17 has been arranged in its properlyadjusted position between the anges 8 and 9 the screws or bolts 12, 18, and 20 are tightenod and the plate 17 is heid in its xed posizion against movement between the flanges 6o 8 and 9 while the-hopper is in use. As has previously been stated, the discharge-opening thus formed by'the portions 14 and 15 of the plate 10 and the portion 2l of the plate 17 is such that the shells are fed into the open 65 ing in successive order, one after the other,
land are always in the proper position 'while enteringthe said opening and'while being fed through the chute or racen-ay 16 to the receiving member 2i in a plate 23 in 'the liv ble l, as illustrated in Fig. 1 o.' the drawings. One of thesaid side shells o'r sections, n.54, is provided with a suitable bearing.: 24, iu which there is a spindle 25, haring an oscil- -latng inoiioinranil upon the said spindle is -a brush 2li for brnslzingorsweeping the shells, plates, or the like past. the-discharge-owning in the hopper 1 into thesnhlopening to be 'prop erly delivered into the rncewny or chute 1G. T he cross-seciion of this chute or racewny i: made to correspond to the shape of the said disclmrgeopening, these shapes varying no oor-dint: to the shapes of tho articles or parte to be fed to other parts o( the machine.
I :un nwaro that some changes may be made in tho construction of the hopper-or feeding device without departing from the `scope o` this invention. Ilenee I do not limit. my in volition to the .exact arrangements rind com binntions of the parts :is described ln thi foregoing specilication and as illustrated il the accompanying drawings, nor dol conlim myself to the exact. details of the construe lion of the said parts. A
