The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as
will be more fully described hereinafteran then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. f

The improved boiler is provided with transversely-extending front and rear Waterchambers A `and B, spaced a suitable distance apart and connected with each other at their inner or opposite faces by large water-tubes C, preferably four in number, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. The front waterchamberA is set on the front wall D of a firebox E, having the usual charging-doors E', grate E2, ash-pit E3, and doors E4, leading to the said ash-pit. lThe rear ends of the grate E2 terminate or extend to a lire-clay Wall E5 at the innerface of the lower end ot the rear water-chamber B. (See Fig. 2.)
Through Aeach of the large Water-tubes C extend smoke-return fines F, having their rear ends extending through the outer face of the rear Water-chamber B, and the said smoke-return ilues F have their front ends extending through a removable section A', forming part of the front face of the front water-chamber A. Short smoke-dues G ex;
tend longitudinally through the front Waterchamber A and its front and rear faces, and similar short smoke-fines G extend longitudinally through the rear Water-chamber B and its front and rear faces, as Will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2,.it being, however, expressly understood that the said short smoke-dues G and G are located outside the largewater-tnbes C.
A feed-Water pipe H is connected at or near its middle with asuitable supply, and the said feed-Water pipe extends transversely in the lower portion of the front Water-chamber A, and the ends of the said feed-Water pipe H open into feed-Water chambers I, formed at the sides ofthe front water-chamber A, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. The feed Water chambers I are connected by pipes J withstand-pipes K, connecting a mud-drum rL with a steam-drum N, the said pipes J on The mud-drum L is arranged in the rear of the lower end of the rear Water-chamber B and is connected with the same by branchv pipes L', so that the feed-Water can circulate from the chambers I through the pipes Jinto the stand-pipes K to the mud-drum L and through the branch pipes L' into the rear Water-chamber B, from which the water can pass through the large water-tubes C into the front Water-chamber A.

and pipes O vof small diameter connect the top of the mud-drum L with the bottom of the steam-drum N between the stand-pipes K, so
that the said pipes 0 form the rear wall of the boiler.
The upper end of the front Water-chamberl A is connectedby pipes P with the steamdrum N, and the said pipes P are arranged IOO carried to the mud-drum L to accumulate therein and to be removed therefrom from time to time. through suitable manholes in the ends of the drum. Y
In order to obtain convenient access to the interior of the front water-chamber A and water-tubes C, I provide the section A with a manhole A2, the said section A when removed from the front face of the water-chamber A giving access to the tubes C to permit removal and renewal of the same Whenever necessary.
The forward ends C of the large Watertubes C are somewhat enlarged and are riveted to flanges A3 on the rear face of the front Water-chamber A to allow convenient withdrawal of a tube C whenever it is necessary to renew the same when worn out. The rear ends of the tubes C are similarly riveted to ianges B' on the inner face of the rear water-chamber B. Packing-rings may be interposed between the flanges A3 and B and the ends of the tubes C, as indicated in Fig. 2.
Ou the front face of the water-chamber A is secured the usual smoke-box Q for connection with the chimney or stack, and into the said smoke-box Q open the ues F and G.
` The pipes O, forming the rear wall of the boiler, are spaced a distance from the outer face of the Water chamber B, so as to form with the latter a space R for the passage of the smoke, which may readily enter the rear ends of the smoke-return flues F.
It is understood that when the boiler is in operation the h eat and gases arising from the fuel burning in the fire-box E pass up between the large water-tubes C, and part of the smoke and gases passes through the fines G to the chamber R, and another portion passes under the pipes P to the said chamber, and then the smoke and gases pass forward to the tlues F and into the smoke-box Q, and a portion of the gases may also pass through the short smoke-fines G to the said smoke-box.
It is understood that the top of the rear Water-chamber B coincides with the tops of the rear ends of the tubes C, while the front water-chamber A is extended above the tubes C to accommodate the pipes P. Now by this arrangement no dead-water space is formed in the rear waterchamber B, and consequently the water in this chamber flows readily forward iu the somewhat upwardlyinclined tubes C, which deliver Water to the front water-chamber A,
The bottom of the chamber R is preferably closed by doors S under the control of the operator to permit of convenientlyremovingsoot and the like accumulating in the said chamber. The side connecting-pipes J are preferably covered on the outside with a fire-clay wall T, and the pipes P are similarly covered by a top T', and the pipes O are backed bya like fire-clay wall T2, so as to prevent the escape of smoke and gases from the boiler.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Aboiler comprising front and rear transversely-extending water-chambers, large longitudinal water-tubes connecting the chambers with each other at their inner adjacent faces, smoke-return lines extending longitudinally through vthe said water-tubes and through the outer faces of the water-chambers, and short smoke-lines extending longitudinally through each of the water-chambers, as set forth.
2. A boiler, comprising front and rear trans- `versely-extending water-chambers, large longitudinal water-tubes connecting the said chambers with each other, smoke-return fl ues extending longitudinally through the watertubes and through the outer faces of the water-chambers, a transverse mud-drum in the rear of the rear water-chamber and connected with the lower end thereof, a transverselyextending steamdrum in the upper part of the boiler, stand-pipes supporting the steamdrum and connecting it with the mud-drum, and pipes connecting the mud and steam drums and forming the rear Wall of the boiler, as set forth.
3. Aboiler comprising front and rear transversely-extending water-chambers, large longitudinal water-tubes connecting the chambers with each other at their inner adjacent faces, smoke-return ilues ext-ending longitudinally through the said water, tubes and through the outer faces of the Waterchambers, a transverse mud-drum in the rear of the rear water-chamber and connected with the lower end of the said rear water-chamber, feed-water chambers at the sides of the front Water-chamber and connected with the feed- Water supply, stand-pipes rising from the said mud-d rum, and longitudinal side connectingpipes connecting the feed-water chambers with the said stand-pipes, as set forth.

A boiler comprising front and rear transversely-extendin g watenchambersdarge longitudinal Water tubes connecting the chambers with each other at their inner adjacent faces, vsmoke-return lines extending longitudinally through the Water-tubes and the outer faces of the Water-chambers, a muddrum in the rear of the rear water-chamber and connected with the lower end of the said rear water-chamber. a steam-drum, stand -pipes connecting the mud-drum with the steamdrum, top'connectingwater-pipes connecting the upper end of the front Water-chamber with the said steam-drum, the said connecting water-pipes forming the top of the boiler, above the uppermost water-tubes, and small pipes forming the rear wall of the boiler and connecting the steam-drum with the muddrum, the said rear Wall being spaced from the outer face of the rear water-chamber, as set forth.

A boiler, comprising front'and rear wa- 'IDO terchambers, the outer Wall of the front chamber having a removable section, longitudinal water-tubes connecting the chambers With each other, the front ends of the Water-tubes being secured to the inner Wall of the front Water-chamber opposite the removable section thereof, and smoke-return ilues extending longitudinally through each of the water-tubes, and through the outer Wall of the rear water-chamber, the front ends of the smoke-lines of all the Water-tubes extending through the removable section of the outer wall of the front water-chamber, as set forth.
12. A boiler comprising front and rearwater-chambers, of which the outer face of the front water-chamber has a removable section, longitudinal Water tubes connecting the In testimony whereof I have signed my A name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
