TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be itknown that I, CHARLES ROGERS, of Allegheny City, in thcV county of Allegheny, and State oi`-Penn sylvania,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I hereby declare that the following is a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in combining and arranging two short levers with the brake of a hand-pump so as to operate two distinct suckers, the one above the other, in such a manner as that, while one sucker is descending, the other is ascending, which combination and arrangement cause the water to ow either i by the upward or downward movement of the brake, without regard to the shape of the pump-box.
Anotherpart of my invention consists in securing the lower end ofthe sucker-valves to the rods and their attachments, by clamping the leather, forming each sucker, between a metallic male-andl female screw.
To enable others to make and putin operation my improved pump, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation by reference to the annexed drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal elevation of my pump, having the front removed to show the interior.
Figure 2 represents a vertical section of the suckers and pump-rods.
All the drawings are lettered, and similar letters denote corresponding part-s in the several views.
VI construct the barrel of my pump in any of the well-known forms, but, in order to adapt it to ordinary purposes, I usually make it in the shape of a long square box, open at both ends. The back of this box is made to extend some distance above the sides, and to this part, C, the brake S is pivotcd, leaving both ends of the brake S projecting over the sides of the pump-box, as seen at fig. l. On this brake, and at equal 4distances. from the point of its attachment to the box, are pivoted two short levers, A so that their approximating ends shall be nearly over the centre of' the pump, and to. which the sucker-rods P and R are attached. The opposite ends of these levers I connect totheir respective vibrating-links, L, the l'ower ends of which are pivoted tothe outsides of the pump-box. On the end of each pump-rod, extending down into the box, is attached a leathern sucker, T, of the shape of a square conical cup, supported at each of its four sides by an equal number of straps, B, the upper ends of which are secured to a, projecting cross-bar, N. `This cross-bar rests upon a short metallic tube, X, the lower part of which extends down through each cup-shaped sucker, terminating in a screw. Around this tube, and enclosing the Lower end of the sucker, is a screw-ferrule or hoop, G, which firmly holds the suckers to their respective tubes. It will be seen that the rod P extends through the central `tubes in both suckers, but is only made fast to the lower one, while it is at liberty to slide or move with perfect freedom 4through the upper tube. The pump-rod R is attached to the eross-head,` N, of thc topmost sucker, by riveting or otherwise. It will be seen, by this arrangement, that, on raising the brake S, the combination of levers' is such that it causes the pump-rod P to descend, carrying with itthe lower sucker. At the same time, the rod R is drawn up, and with it its sucker, thus separating the suckers in the box, when, on a. reverse movement being given to the brake, as indicated by the dotted lines in fig. 1, the suckers ,will approach each other in the cent1-e of the pump-box, and, by this arrangement of levers, rods, and suckers, are made to balance each other.
Having thus briefly described my invention, I claim- The levers A A, pivot-ed to a brake, S, of a hand-pump, said levers being supported at their outside ends, each by a vibrating-link, L, the whole being combined and arranged to operate, with respect to the pump-boxand its attachments, substantially as described.
