Description

PATENTED DEC. l, 1903.
J. D. REED. Y NUT LOCK.
/lgll N. .l
UNITED STATES iatented December 1,1903.
PATENT EErcE.
JOHN D. REED, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MARY ELIZA REED, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. Y
NUT-LOCK..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,522, dated December 1, 1903.
Application filed October 2l, 1902; Serial No. 128,204. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN DEEEING REED, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new In the device embodying my invention thenut is locked in its adjusted position by means of a locking-key which is held from lateral movement and is provided with a eutting edge which cuts into the under face of the nut, and thereby forms a seat for the key as itis forced against the face of the nut.
The key is held from lateral movement by being mounted in a guiding-groove formed in a plate which may be placed in position vprevious to the screwing home of the nut and may be secured from turning in any suitable manner. The guiding-groove for the key is preferably so arranged that the key extends radially of the nut, as with this arrangement the nut is more firmly held in a fixed position.
Means are provided for retaining the locking-key in place,'and thereby preventing its working loose. Any suitable means may be employed for this purpose which Will engage the key and hold it in position in the groove, so that it cannot move out of engagement with the nut under the influence of repeated shocks and jars.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a device embodying my invention in its preferred form.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the device applied toa nut and in the position to lock the nut. Fig. 2 is a similar vienr showing the device before the key has been forced into position to lockv the nut. Fig. 3 isasectional view on line A B, Fig. 1. Fig..4C is a sectional view on the line C D,.Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side view with the parts in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
In the construction shownin the drawings the locking-key c is mounted in a groove d, formed in the plate or washers. The Washer is provided with a central opening, so that itV theplate and are screwed into the material Y through which the bolt extends. The guiding-groove d extends radially from the central opening in the plate o. The key e is provided with a cutting edge f, which extends above the surface of the plate a, and is inclined at its front end, so as to enter under the face of the nut b.
In using the device the plate o, is secured in position and the nut b'then screwed home. The key e is then forced radially inward, the inclined cutting edge f passing under the face of the nut and cutting a notch b' therein, which forms a seat for the locking-key.
The means shown for retaining the lockingkey in yplace after it has been forced inward into position tovlock the nut consists of a set-screw g, which engages the side of the key and prevents it from working backward in its groove.`
When it is desired to unlock the nut, the locking-key may be Withdrawn by inserting a lever or other suitable device in the notch e', formed in the key for this purpose.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is- Y l. A nut-lock consisting of a plate or washer adapted to be held in fixed position beneath a nut and having a retaining-groove, a lock? `ing-key mounted in said groove and having a cutting edge extending above the surface of the plate to engage and cut its seat in the face ofthe nut'when forced forward in the groove, and means for retaining the lockingkey in' place in the groove, substantially as described. Y
Y 2. A nut-lock consisting of aplate or Washer adapted tobe held in fixed position beneath a nut and provided with a radial retaininggroove, a locking-key mounted insaid groove and provided with a cutting edgel extending above the face of the plate to engage and out its seat in the face of the nut'when forced forward in the groove, and means for retain- IOO ingthelocking-keyin placein the groove, subto engage the nut, and means engaging the stantially as described. key to retain it in piace, substantially as de- 3. In combination with a nut and bolt, a scribed. grooved plate adjacent to the face of the nut, 5 and a locking-key seated in the groove and Witnesses:
adapted to be forced between the plate and nut, said locking-key having a cutting edge JOHN D. REED.
