SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,619, dated May 10, 1904.

To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that LRUDoLF KoREHAeE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of clocks wherein chimes are employed for announcing the diflerent hours and predetermined fractions thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a plurality of sets of soundingmembers in combination with a simple and eflicient mechanism adapted to be adjusted so as to sound the chimes on any one of said sets.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clock embodying my invention and having the outside casing removed. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail as on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail as on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.

Projecting outwardly from the casing 3 is a shaft 6, which is periodically rotated in the usual manner to actuate the chiming and striking mechanismthat is to say, as each successive fraction of the hour at which the chimes are sounded is reached the shaft is turned a predetermined distance to actuate the chiming mechanism, and as each successive hour is reached the shaft is turned to cause the proper actuation of the striking mechanism.
The striking mechanism consists of a disk 7 fixed to the shaft 6 and provided with pins 8, adapted to actuate a lever 9 for striking each hour upon a gong 10. During the'progress of each hour the parts occupy the position shown in the drawings, "in which position the pins 8 are out of line with the levers 9 and the chiming mechanism is in operative position. Just prior to the striking of each hour the shaft 6 is given a slight outward movement, which brings the pins 8 in line with the lever 9 and throws the chiming mechanism out of operative position.
Thus far the clock is of well-known construction and needs no detailed description herein.
My invention in its preferred form is of the following construction:
Mounted. in a bearing 11 on the faceplate 1 is a rock-shaft 12, provided on its outer end with an arrow 13 and on its inner end with a disk 14, carrying a pin 14, which engages the upper forked end of a lever 15. This lever is pivoted to the casing 3 and is provided on its lower end with a cam-block 16, which is adapted to act upon a longitudinally-movable shaft 17, extending through the casing 3. The shaft 17 extends beyondthe casing and isprovided with a head 18, carrying an antifrictionroller 19, which extends into a groove 20 in a collar 21, projecting from a drum 22'. This drum is slidingly fitted to a sleeve 23, which is loosely mounted on the shaft 6. The shaft 17 is held against the cam-block 16 by the action of a spring 24, bearing against a pin 25 on an arm 26, depending from said shaft. When the arrow 13 is moved to give the shaft 12 half a turn, the lever 15 is moved to disengage the cam-block 16 from engagement with the shaft 17 whereupon the spring 24 causes a slight endwise movement of the drum 22. Suitable stop-pins 27 are provided on the disk 14, which are adapted to take against a fixed pin 28, and thereby limit the movement of the shaft 12 in either direction.
The drum 22 is provided with two sets of pins 29 30, which are adapted during the rotation of the drum to actuate two sets of levers 31 32, respectively. These levers are mounted on a. shaft 33 above the drum 22, and their lower ends project downwardly to meet the pins 29 30, which are so located in respect to the levers that when the pins 29 are in line with the levers 31 the pins 30 are out of line with the levers 32, and vice versa. The upper ends of the levers 32 project horizontally and are provided with striking members 34, which are arranged directly above a series of gongs 35, arranged parallel with the shaft 6. These gongs are attuned to each other and correspond in number with said levers. As the pins 30 rise and escape the levers 32 the latter are caused to strike the gongs 35 in a manner to produce chimes thereby, which may be varied according to the arrangement of the pins on the drum 22. The upper ends of the levers 31 project vertically and are connected by cords 36 with a series of vertically-arranged flat springs 37, which are secured at their lower ends to a bar 38 and are provided on their upper or free ends with striking members 39. These striking members are located adjacent to a series of tubes 40, which are arranged parallel with the shaft 6 and gongs 35. By arranging the series of tubes 40 and the series of gongs 35 parallel with the shaft 6 I am enabled to make a direct connection between the latter and the tubes and gon gs. The tubes 40 correspond in number with the levers 31 and springs 3'7 and are attuned to each other similarly to the gongs 35, so that as the levers 31 are actuated by the pins 29 the springs 37, being connected to said levers, will cause the striking of the tubes 40 and the production of the chimes thereby.
In order to rotate the drum 22 with the sleeve 23 and yet permit its endwise movement on the latter, I provide the sleeve 23 with a head 41, from which projects a pin 42, which enters an opening 43 in said drum. The head 41 lies adjacent to the disk 7, and the latter is provided with a pin 44, which projects into an opening 45 in said head, whereby when the parts occupy the positions shown the sleeve 23, and perforce the drum 22, are rotated with the shaft 6 to produce the chimes, and when the shaft 6 is moved to engage the pins 8 with the lever 9 the pin 44 is disengaged from the head 41 and the drum 22 remains idle during the striking of each hour. In order to lock the drum in position when it is disconnected from the shaft 6, I provide an arm 46, which is pivoted, as at 47, to the framework. The free end of this arm is provided with a beveled antifriction-roller 48, which rests upon the disk 7 and raises and lowers the arm 46 as the disk 7 is moved back and forth with the shaft 6. The free end of the arm 46 is also provided with a tooth 49, which is adapted to enter one of the notches 45 in the head 41 when the arm is down, and thereby prevent the rotation of the drum.
By the above-described construction it will be seen that when the parts occupy the positions shown in the drawings the pins 29 are in line with the levers 31 and the chimes will be sounded on the tubes 40 and that if the arrow 13 be given a half-turn the drum 22 will be shifted to bring the pins 30 in line with the levers 32, whereupon the pins 29 will be moved out of line with the levers 31, and
at the same time the pins 30 will be moved into line with the levers 32 and the chimes will be sounded on the gongs 35.
I claim- 1. In aclock of the class described, the combination with a plurality of chiming mechanisms each of which is formed of a plurality of sound-producing devices having the same tone but of different pitch, of a set of levers carrying members adapted to strike the soundproducing devices of one chiming mechanism, a set of arm-carrying members adapted to strike the sound producing devices of the other chiming mechanism, a second set of levers, operative connections between said levers and arms, a shaft, a drum carried by said shaft, pins on said drum for actuating said. levers, and means for adjusting said drum to engage the pins with either one of said sets of levers.
2. In a clock of the class described, the combination with a plurality of gongs attuned to each other, and a series of tubes attuned to each other, of a plurality of levers adapted to strike said gongs, a plurality of levers adapted to strike said tubes, a shaft, a drum carried by said shaft and slidable thereon, pins on said drum for actuating said levers, a longitudinally-movable shaft connected to said drum for shifting the latter upon its shaft, and means for actuating said longitudinallymovable shaft for adjusting the drum to engage the pins with thelevers of any one of said chiming mechanisms to produce chimes thereby.
3. In a clock of the class described, the combination with a plurality of chiming mechanisms each of which is formed of a series of sound-prod ucin g devices having the same tone but of different pitch, of aplurality of levers for each chiming mechanism, striking members carried by said levers and adapted to strike the sound-producing devices, a shaft, a drum carried by said shaft, pins on said drum for actuating said levers, a longitudinallymovable shaft connected to said drum, a lever provided with a carn-surface adapted to engage and shift said longitudinally-movable shaft, and means for adjusting said lever to engage the pins with the levers of any one of said chiming mechanisms to produce chimes thereby.
4. In aclock of the class described, the combination with a plurality of chiming mechanisms each of which is formed of a series of sound-producin g devices having the same tone but of different pitch, and a striking mechanism, of a. plurality of levers for each chiming mechanism, striking members carried by said levers and adapted to strike the sound-producing devices, a shaft, a drum carried by said shaft, pins on said drum for actuating said levers, a longitudinally-movable shaft connected to said drum, a lever provided with a cam-surface adapted to engage and shift said longitudinally-movable shaft, means for adjusting said lever to engage the pins with the levers of any one of said chiming mechanisms to produce chimes thereby, and means to prevent rotation of the drum during the actuation of the striking mechanism.
5. In a clock of the class described, the combination with motor mechanism, the striking mechanism,' and a plurality of chiming mechanisms, of a shaft operated by the motor mechanism and providing means common to both the striking and chiming mechanisms for the actuation thereof, a drum carried by said shaft for operating the chiming mechanisms, said drum being slidably mounted upon said shaft, a longitudinally-movable shaft connected to said drum for shifting the latter upon its shaft, and means for actuating said longitudinally movable shaft for adjusting the drum to engage the pins with the levers of any one of said chiming mechanisms to produce chimes thereby.
6. In a clock of the class described, the com-. bination with motor mechanism, the striking mechanism, and a plurality of chiming mechanisms, of a shaft operated by the motor mechanism and providing means common to both the striking and chiming mechanisms for the actuation thereof, a drum carried by said shaft for operating the chiming mechanisms independently of each other, means for adjusting the drum upon said shaft to cause the drum to operate either of the chiming mechanisms, and means for locking the drum against rotation during the operation of the striking mechanism.
7. In aclock of the class described, the combination with motor mechanism, the striking mechanism, and a plurality of chiming mechanisms, of a shaft operated by the motor mechanism and providing means common to both the striking and chiming mechanisms for the actuation thereof, a drum carried by said shaft for operating the chiming mechanisms independently of each other, a longitudinallymovable shaft independent of the first-mentioned shaft and connected to the drum for adjusting the latter upon its shaft, and means for operating said longitudinally-movable shaft.
8. In a clock of the class described, the combination with motor mechanism, the striking mechanism, and a plurality of chiming mechanisms, of a shaft operated by the motor mechanism and providing means common to both the striking and chiming mechanisms for the actuation thereof, a drum carried by said shaft for operating the chiming mechanisms independently of each other, a longitudinallymovable shaft connected to the drum for adjusting the latter upon its shaft, a spring for shifting said longitudinally-movable shaft, and means for restraining the movement of said shaft under the influence of said spring.
9. In a clock of the class described, the combination with motor mechanism, the striking mechanism, and a plurality of chiming mechanisms, of a shaft operated by the motor mechanism and providing means common to both the striking and chiming mechanisms for the actuation thereof, a drum carried by said shaft for operating the chiming mechanisms independently of each other, a longitudinallymovable shaft connected to the drum for adjusting the latter upon its shaft, a spring for shifting said longitudinally-movable shaft, a lever provided with a cam-surface against which the longitudinally-movable shaft rests, whereby the movement of said shaft under the influence of said spring is restrained, and means for shifting said lever to release said shaft.
10. In a clock of the character described, the combination with the chiming and striking mechanism, of the actuating-shaft therefor, the disk longitudinally movable with said shaft, a drum carried by said shaft, means on said drum for actuating the chiming mechanism, a pivoted arm resting on said disk, and means to prevent the rotation of said drum by its engagement with said arm, whereby when the shaft is moved longitudinally to engage the disk with the striking mechanism the arm will prevent the rotation of the drum.

levers for said members, striking members connected to said levers and adapted to strike said sounding members, the shaft for actuating the chiming and striking mechanism, the disk longitudinally movable with said shaft, a sleeve on said shaft, a head on said sleeve, a drum on said sleeve, pins on said drums for actuating said levers, means for connecting said drum with said sleeve so as to be longitudinally movable thereon, a pivoted arm resting on said disk, means on said-arm for engaging said head when the disk is moved from beneath said arm, and means for adjusting said drum to engage the pins with the levers of either one of said sets of sounding members.
