PATENT OFFICE.
MANIFOLD SALES-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,073, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed July 10,1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES' STEEDMAN HOLMES, machinist, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at No. 207 Palmerston street, Carlton, in the British State of Victoria, Australia, have invented a new and useful Improved Manifold Sales-Book, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved manifold sales check for drapers, traders, and others, which consists of one, two, or more lengths of paper reeled or wound together after being suitably printed, numbered, and marked off, as will be hereinafter explained. When put to use, the reeled or wound sheets are arranged in a suitable carrier furnished with a tablet and the necessary transfer sheet or sheets to make the impression or impressions, each of said sheets being made secure, so that the person using the contrivance need not handle the transfer-sheet except when it is desired to replace it with another sheet.
The essential feature in this invention is the obtaining of sales-checks from prepared paper sheet or sheets which is or are wound into one roll or reel.
In order that the invention may be well understood, it will now be described, aided by a reference to the attached sheet of drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the salescheck and its carrier; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the center of the wound or reeled paper as arranged in the carrier, and Fig. 3 shows a part of the unwound sheet as used in Fig. 1 laid fiat. Fig. 4 is an end view of the carrier with its top partly raised. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the carrier.
In Fig. 3 the paper for the single-sheet roll is shown divided or marked off at equidistant positions, preferably by a line of perforations a, into spaces or checks A and A. On the upper side of the sheet within each alternate space A, starting at the left-hand end, is printed consecutively the numbers 1, 2, 3, &c., as shown in full figures, while upon the opposite side of the sheet within the alternate intermediate spaces A is again printed consecutively the numbers 1, 2,-3, &c., as shown by dotted figures, the latter, whether they be figures or letters, being designed to Serial No. 67,785, (No model.)
identify the piece A with its foregoing and adjoining check-piece A, upon which the original matter is written. As will be seen, the original check-pieces A may be printed as account or as invoice or other forms to suit the business of the user.
B is a carrier for either of aforesaid paperrolls, provided with a tablet B, while C is a sheet of carbon or other transfer paper, in Fig. 1 shown with its end secured by being clamped between a spring rod or bar C, connected by arms 0 to the top of the casing, and a flange 5, projecting from the carrier above the mouth or slot B through which the paper is unwound or drawn out to upon the tablet. The roll of paper is supported within the casing B by adjustable pintles B while the casing is hinged at B to allow its to l)l half to open for the insertion of the paperro To use the single-sheet sales-check shown in Figs. 1 and 3, 'the sheet A No. l is drawn out sufficiently far to allow of its being folded from the perforated division at over the carbon-sheet C and above the similarly numbered or marked sheet A No. 1, and after the salesman has filled up the form the sheet is again drawn forward until the next part-say, A No. 2is in position ready for folding over the carbon, and when the parts A and A N o. l are torn off the contrivance will be again ready for use.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v In combination, a tablet B, a divided cylindrical casing at one side thereof, adjustable pintles B held in the ends of the cylinder, a
roll of paper supported by said pintles and adapted to be drawn out across said tablet, said paper being divided by rows of perforations into sheets which are consecutively numbered, a carbon-clamping rod C supported by the casing and a carbon-sheet held thereby, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES STEEDMAN HOLMES. Witnesses:
BEDLINGTON BoDY'coMB, N. G. S. THOMPSON.
