TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, DANIEL K. WERTMAN, of Centralia, in the county of Columbia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented .a' new and improved Breast-Pad; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the a'rt to make and use the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a front view of my improved pad.

Figure 3 is a. det'ail section of the pad, showing its construction.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to breast-collars for harness, and consists of two pads stitfened by sheet-metal platesl and attachedto the breast-strap, whereby a breast-strap or collar is obtained which is superior in many points to the breast-collars heretofore made. v

In the accompanying platevof drawings, my imprey'ed pads are shown at AQA, connected by the breaststrap B, which is affixed to the pads by screws a. The -pad'is composed of a plate of sheet metal more lor less approximating to the formshown at ig.,1. This plate is backed by a smaller oblongpla-tc to confer strength to the first plate. These plates areshown in section at iig. 3', e being the main plate, which gives formA and curve to the pad, and f -being the yoblong plate conferring.additional strength to the plate e. A burr or nut, 6, serves to secure 'the breast-strap to the pads, as shown. The two plates are riveted together in the manner shown. The section of fig. 3 is taken through the line :v x, iig. 1, and shows the construction of the pcd-plates and cushion d, all ofwhich, taken together, form the pad proper.' The plates e are bent to coniorm to the prominent points of the shoulder of the animal, and thereby cause the drought'strain vto come upon-the most suitablearzd strongestpart of the shoulder, instead of bein-fcY distributed over against the front and sides of the neck. i

My improved pad is cooler, and less liable to gall or choke the animal when pulling a heavy'load. Other objectionable-features my improvements obviate, and conduce to furnish abreast-pad which is light, cool, and easy to the horse, and capable of sustaining heavy traction, and applying the strain or pressure of the same to the most suitable part of the shoulder of the animal. Again, the breast-strap may be made into a series of holes, whereby the pads may be located to iit exactly in the right place o'n the shoulders of different horses..

My improved pad is durable, cheap, and presents o. symmetrical and attractive appearance, and supplies a Want long felt by the public.

I claim as new, and desire to-secure by Letters Patent- Thc breast-pads'A A, constructed as described, and consisting of the plates e f, riveted together, the covering d and filling 11, when said pads are secured to the breast-strap B'by means of screwsa, all-arranged as described for the purpose'specied.
