$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,567, dated. June 28, 1904.
Application filed December 4,1903. SerialNo.183,772. (N model.)
land in the county of Jefferson, State of Texas,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to match-boxes in general, and more particularly to the class of single-delivery match-boxes, the object of the invention being to provide a cheap and simple construction wherein the matches will be successively projected longitudinally from the box in such manner that the dormant matches will not interfere with movement of the match being projected or ejected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which will embody but few parts and which will be simple and durable.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a box embodying the present invention and illustrating a match projecting therefrom. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the box from front to rear, the ejecting-finger being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the box with the back thereof removed. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal vertical section through the match-compartment. Fig. 5 is a top plan view with the top of the casing removed.
Referring now to the drawings, the present match-box comprises a casing 10, divided by a longitudinal vertical partition 11 into a match-holding compartment 12 and a compartment 13 for the ejecting mechanism. In the match-holding compartment 12 is a false bottom formed of a metal plate, which is bent upon itself to form the upwardly-directed parallel members 15 and 16, having the connecting bight portion 17 and the divergent wings 18 and 19, which extend from the upper ends of the parallel portions upwardly and longitudinally of the compartment 12. The false bottom is fitted between the partition 11 and the front of the box, the portions 15 and 16 being so spaced as "to permit only a single match to lie between them, this interspace bethe matches pass successively after being placed upon the wings 18 and In the front of the box is a perforation 20 just above the bight portion 17 of the plate forming the false bottom, so that if a match lying upon this bight portion be moved longitudinally and forwardly it will be projected through said perforation. To project the matches successively through said perforation from their positions upon the bight portion 17 or bottom of the match-passage, an ejecting rod or finger 22 is provided and is slidably mounted in a perforation 23 in the partition 11 and which alines with the perforation 20. The position of the rod or finger is such that when moved longitudinally and forwardly it will engage the end of the match upon the bottom of the match-passage and will slide the match forwardly to project it through the perforation 20. The match may be then grasped and drawn entirely from the box. To operate the ejecting finger or rod, a shaft 25 ismounted longitudinally of the compartment, 13 in the upper part thereof, and upon it is pivotally mounted a rockerarm 26, which extends rearwardly from said shaft and then downwardly beyond the ejecting-finger. The ejecting-finger is engaged in a cross-head 27 at its rear end, which latter 'slides upon the guide-blocks 28 and is held against longitudinal movement thereon by the shoulders 29 of the cross-head. From the rear side of the cross-head projects a loop 30, through which the lower end of rocker-arm 'is loosely engaged, so that when said arm is oscillated or rocked the cross-head, and therewith the ejecting-finger will be reciprocated, the cross-head with its guides and the perforation in which the ejecting-finger is engaged serving to hold the finger at alltimes in position to engage the end of the lowermost match in the match-passage.
To operate the rocker-arm, a plunger 31 is provided and has its lower end bifurcated to receive the rear upper portion of the rockerarm, to which it is pivoted. The plunger engages slidably a guide-opening 32 in the top ing, in effect, a match-passage down which of the box and has at its upper end a head 33, which limits the downward movement of the plunger. The movement of the plunger is sufficient to move the ejecting-finger so far as to projecta match from the front of the box.
To return the rocker-arm,and therewith the plunger and the ejecting-finger, a helical spring 35 is mounted upon the rocker-shaft and is connected at one end to the rocker-arm and at the opposite end to the wall of the casing. When the plunger is depressed, the spring is placed under additional tension which is sufiicient to retract the ejecting-finger and raise the plunger when the latter is released. With this construction the matches are placed upon the divergent portions of the false bottom with their heads, preferably,to the front, so that the matches will pass by gravity to the match-passage and downwardly therein as the matches are successively ejected from the bottom of the passage, this ejection being accomplished by reciprocating the plunger, as above described.
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made, and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is A match-box comprising two compartments one of which is arranged to hold matches and has a portion arranged to contain a column of horizontal matches, an ejecting-finger slidably mounted in position to engage the lowermost match of the column, a cross-head with which the ejecting-finger is connected, guides disposed to hold the cross-head with the finger in operative position, means for holding the cross-head with the finger normally and yieldably retracted and means for advancing the cross-head with the finger.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
