Be it known that I, CHARLES WESLEY AL- LEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merriman, in the county of Cherry and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and vuseful Improvements in Rotary Engines; and

In the carrying out of my invention I provide a suitable cylindric casing 1, suitably supported in position, and within the same is arranged a piston 2, whose shaft 2 bears laterally in said casing and having applied thereto means, as a belt-pulley, for transmitting motion to the machinery and also connected up, as presently disclosed, to a reversing-valve later described. Said piston carries radiallysliding abutments or wings 2" effective under the impact of steam for imparting rotary motion to said piston. Later-ally inserted within each piston of the easings are packing-strips 2x, each being' semicircular and adapted to effect a steam-tight fit between the pistons and their casings, said packings being spring seated or cushioned for that purpose. The abutments or wings 2" each have at their relatively outer ends suitably spring-cushioned packing-strips 2, adapted to fit steam-tight against the inner sides of the casing or wall of the piston-containing chamber. Within the piston-containing chamber of the casing 1 is suitably secured, at the upper end thereof, opposite spaced-apart cam-plates 3, two being arranged edgewise to and upon each side of a spring cushioned or pressed partition A, arranged transversely of the vertical plane of the casing 1 and dividing ofi' the live-steamreceiving side from the exhaust-steam side of the piston-containing chamber, as shown. The application of pressure to said partition is effected by interposing springs 4E therebetween andthe upper wall of said chamber, said springs being applied to bolt-like studs 4b, headed or countersunk into said partition and extending through passages therein and having their unheaded ends playing in -recesses in said wall, said partition itself also being capable of movement and guided between parallel cleats or pendants 4c, secured to said wall.
Two ports 5 5, serving as steam supply and exhaust, are provided in the casing 1, establishing communication between opposite sides of the piston containing chamber and the ports 6 6" of the reversing-valve 6, arranged within a housing or chamber 7 superposed upon the piston-casing 1. Said latter ports are adapted to alternately communicate with the ports 8 8, produced in the casing l and having pipe connection 9 9LL with a second casing 10, containing a like piston as piston 2 arranged in casing 1 and secured upon the same shaft 2 or an extension thereof provided with a belt-pulley 2y for transmitting motion or power. Said shaft 2a has shaft, crank, and pitman/connection l1 11a 11b with and actuates a slide-valve 12, arranged between the reversing-valve 6 and the steam-supply port 13 for controlling the steam-supply, said port having valved pipe connection 14 with a steamsupply source. (Not shown.) Said reversingvalve is conveniently actuated by a hand-lever l5, preferably fulcrumed in position by a IOO shaft 15, supported in suitable bearings, as 15x, and having end cranks 15", with their terminals 15C engaging' the rod 15, connected to the valve.
As will be seen in Fig'. 13, the slide-valve 12x has an exhaust-port 12 registering' with the port 12 in the steam-chest, said chest having also supply-ports 12" 12c communicating with ports or passages 5 and 5, respectively.
It will be understood that latitude is allowed herein as to details, since they may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and the latter remain intact and be protected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv
1. A rotary engine comprising a plurality of pistons carrying' abutnients, eecentricallyarranged spaeedapart pendants in the upper part ot' cach piston-containing chamber, a common shaft for said pistons, one of the casings oi' the piston-containing chambers having' a steam-supply-eontrolling valve for said piston, and common steainpipes connecting the steam-chests of said casings with ports conimunicating' with opposite sides of one of said easings.
2. A rotary engine, comprising a plurality of pistons carrying abntments, spaced-apart eecentrieally-arranged pendants in the upper part of each piston-containing chamber, partitions arranged intermediately ot' said pendants and the live-steam supply and exhaust sides of said chambers and pistons, a steamsupply-controlling valve for said piston, and
a reversing-valve arranged with relation to said controlling-valve and common steampipes for the steam-chests of the easing's of the piston-containing chambers connecting' with ports communicating with opposite sides of one of said casings.
3. A rotary engine, comprising apiston carrying abutments, space d-apart eccentrieallyarranged pendants in the upper part of the piston containing chamber, a partition arranged intermediately of said pendants and the steam supply and exhaust side oi' said chamber and piston, a steam-sapply-controlling' valve for said piston, and shaft crank and pitman connection between said steam-supplycontrolling valve and the piston-shaft.
4. A rotary engine, embracing a plurality of pistons equipped with abutments, eccentrieally-arranged pendants in the upper part of each piston-containing chamber, a partition arranged in each of said chambers, intermediately of said pendants and the steam supply and exhaust side of eaeh piston and chamber, a steam-supply-eontrolling' valve arranged in connection with one of said piston-chambers, and common steam-pipes for the steam-chests of said casing's, connecting with ports commnnicating with opposite sides of one of said casing-s.
