LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,670, dated August 16, 1904.

Be it known that I, HENRY TENTsCHERT. a citizen of the United States, residing atSt. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, chiefly in section. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section, showing one of the supporting-posts. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view showing particularly the head of one of the supporting-posts. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of one of the supporting posts. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, showing the anchor-plate of the supporting-post secured by eyelets; and Fig. 6 shows a modification.

This invention relates to improvements in what are generally known as loose-leaf binders, the object being' to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efhcient construction.

To this end and also to improve generally upon devices of the character indicated the invention consists in the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A and B represent thev front and back covers. Each of these covers comprises a body portion 1, of pasteboard or other suitable material, and a covering 2, which is commonly pasted upon said body portion in a manner which is generally well understood. This coveringQ extends beyond what may be termed the inner edge of the body portion of the cover and is then folded upon itself.I whereby the extension 3 is produced. Openingst for the hereinafter-mentioned posts are made in the said extension of one of the covers, preferably the upper cover, and preferably the said openings have theiredges protected by eyelets 5, which can be very readily applied.

The covers are connected by andthe leaves are held upon posts C. Each of these posts comprises telescoping members 6 and 7 The female post member 6 has an anchor 8, connected thereto at one end, this anchor being here shown as a thin plate, which extends laterally from the said post member,and at that end of said female post member which is provided with said anchor the wall of the post member is thickened interiorly and is interiorly threaded, so that the diameter of the threaded opening at one end of the post member is less than the diameter of the plain opening at the other end of the post member. The male post member 7 comprises a shank 10, which fairly snugly fits the larger opening in the female post member, a reduced threaded stem 11 extending from one end of said shank l() and being adapted to screw into the threaded portion of the female post member. Upon the other end of said shank 10 is a head 12, which is preferably milled about its periphery, said head being also preferably provided with a bail 13, whose ends pivotally enter sockets in the periphery of said head. This bail can be thrown. down to lie between the planes including the upper'and lower surfaces of the said head or can be swung up in order to afford a handle which can be grasped by the operator for the pupose of turning the male postmember. Between the layers of the extension 3 of the covering are strips 14 of suitable material, such as binders board, and the beforementionedV anchor-plate 8 of the female post Vmember lies between said strips, the female post member extending through an opening in one of the strips and one layer of the extension of the covering. The before-mentioned openings 4L in the other cover are adapted to fit over what may be termed the free end of the female post member, and the male post member being' screwed into'place through saidopenings 1 and into the threaded socket of the female 'post member the covers are held together in a manner which will be readily apparent, the customary openings in the leaves having the posts C passing therethrough and being thus properly bound between the covers.

The anchor-plate 8 is pasted to the strips 14, and said strips are pasted to each other, the layers of the extension 3 of the covering being pasted upon said strips.

In the accompanying drawings the anchor- IOO plate is shown as provided with struck -up ends which, if the binders board be heavy enough, bite into said binders board, and

` eyelets 16 are also illustrated as passing the cover to which said extension is connected,

as shown in Fig. 6; but preferably the said extensions 3 are turned inwardly, as shown in Fig. 1. This latter-mentioned construction permits the body portion of the upper cover A to extend over the heads of the male members of the posts, so that these heads are concealed when the book is closed and are also prevented from coming in contact with the desk or the person or clothing of the user of the book. In fact, by reason of the construction indicated when the present binder is closed a perfectly smooth exterior is presented by both covers.

The minimum thickness of the book is determined by the length of the female post member; but the book can be expanded by screwing the male post member outwardly. By reason of the heretofore-described construction of said post members the projecting portion of said male member when thus screwed outwardly is only of slightly less diameter than is the female post member, so that an almost eXteriorly-smooth post is presented and the leaves can be readily placed upon or removed from the posts. The bails upon the heads of the posts permit the male members of the posts to be properly grasped and screwed into place or loosened by the operator notwithstanding the fact that thin fiat heads can be employed.

I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of rmy invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the character indicated, a post-supporting element, a post, and an anchorplate upon said post and having struck-up portions which extend at an angle .to the plane of the body portion of said plate and enter said supporting element; substantially as described.

2. In a binder, a post member, a second post member having threaded engagement with said first-mentioned post member, a head upon said second post member and provided with sockets opening upon the periphery of said head, a bail having its ends pivotally entering said sockets, said bail, except as to its said pivotal ends, lying wholly outside of the periphery of said head, and a cover extending over said head and bail; substantially as described.
