Description
JOHN FANDEL, OFBOSTON, MASSACHUSETflSf Leltcrs Patent No. 77,020, dated April 21, 18 68.
. IMPROVED MILK-(JAN coves.
i llgt fittlgrbnlt numb In in time green @ntmt nut mulling glut of figs 321m.
Be it known that I, Jouxl hnnnt, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented at new and useful Improvement in Covers or Stoppers forMilk and other Guns, of which thefoliowing is :1 full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the'aeeompanying drawings, making a. part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of u- .milkean embodying my improvement. Figure 2 is a perspective view, showing the upper purl: of a. can, with the cover open.
The object of my invention .is to provide a means for covering' or stopping a milk or other can, so us to dispense with the use of the removable independent stopper ill-common use; and the invention consists in attaching a. cover to such nun by menns nf a hinge, in combination with a. spring, which shall firmly hold the cover down, when closed, the inner side of tbe' said cover being so constructed as to fit perfectly tight on the can, and preventnny of the liquid from escaping. The usual method of stopping" milk-cans is by a wooden stopper. These are scarcely ever tight enough toprevent leakage, and when forced in are often very diflicult to take out they 311-0 also liable to become lost undinjured, so as to be useless. Cork stoppers areolso equally objectionable. my improvement these objections'ure entirely obviated, and a reliable, effective stopper is always at hand. i
I Referring to the drawings, A represents the neck oifu can, which may be of any" suitable formor'siz e. B is the cover, made of unysuitublc metal, provided with a rini, a, fitting snugly over the edges of the neck of the can. On the inner side of the cover is plucecl u disk or packing, of Indizi rubber, or gut-ta perehu, b, which is secured in place by means of a hinge or casing, C, which is attached to the centre oi. the top of the cover, and is designed to lit closely to the inner edge of the topof the neck of the can, so as to prevent the milk or contents of the can from coming in contact with the Indie-rubberpacking. The cover 13 is-hinged to the neck of the can, on the outside. The rear end of the portion D, forming the hinge. extends buck, and rests against the end 0t :1. stiff V-shuped spring, S, the other end of the spring being secured to the con, so that when thecover of the cun is closed, the spring will press suificiently hnrdagninst the reur'of the hinge to keep the cover firmly closed upon the top of the can, and prevent any of the liquid from running out, even ii the can is upset. The cover will also be held open by menus oi the spring. t
Although designed to be used for milk-cans, my improvement is equally applicable to cans for containing any other liquid.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patient, is-- The combination, with u mill; or other can, of the hinged cover 13, the spring S, and packing b, substantiully as and for the purpose specified. v
In testimony'whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in thepresen cc of two subscribing witnesses.
