CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,447, dated October 25, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W ILLIAM WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in car-couplers of the Master Oar Builders or swinging-hook type. It is customary to connect the swinging hook or knuckle to the head by a pivot-pin passing down through lugs on the headand through the knuckle, said pin being provided with a head at its upper end. When applying couplers having such pin movable upward for removing the knuckle couplers, especially on passenger-cars having the extended platform, the extension of such platform projects out over the pin and in such proximity thereto as to prevent the removal of the pin in case of the breakage of the knuckle without withdrawing or partially withdrawing the entire coupler-head from position. This operation involves considerable labor and time.
The object of the present invention is to provide for the insertion of a pin upwardly through the lugs on the head and through the knuckle and locking of the pin to the couplerhead in such manner that the pin can be readily removed when the coupler-head is in position and without any shifting of the latter;
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is an under side plan view of the coupler having my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line II II, Fig. 1, the parts being innorinal position. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail viewon, a plane indicated by the line III III, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an under side plan of a portion of a coupler-head and knuckle, illustrating a modification of my improvement. Fig. 5. is a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line V V, Fig. 4E; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view illustrating a further modification of the invention.
In the practice of my invention the coupler is constructed as regards the head 1, the knuckle 2, locking mechanism, &c., in the usual or any suitable manner. The pivot-pin 3 is preferably provided with a head or enlargement 4 at its lower end, so as to prevent upward creeping or displacement when in use. This pin is inserted up through the lugs or ears 9 on the head and through the opening in the knuckle and is supported by a suitable lock engaging the pin and the coupler-head.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the pinsupporting device consists of a block 5,adapted to slide in a direction transverse of the pivotpin along supporting guides or undercut walls or projections 6, formed on the under side of the lower lug 9 of the coupler-head adjacent to the opening for the pin. This sliding supporting-block can be locked in position in alinement with or under the pivotpin by any suitable means-as, for example,"
in the construction shown the block is provided with a finger 7, adapted to project through a vertical Wall 6 on thecoupler-head and is provided with a transverse hole for the split pin 8.
In lieu of the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 I may employ an oblong block 10, adapted to slide up in radial recesses 11 on opposite sides of the hole for the pivot-pin in the lower lug 9. Lateral recesses 12 extend from the vertical recesses 11, so that the block can be given a quarter-turn, and thereby lock the pivot-pin in position. The block is locked to prevent backward movement. A suitable form of lock for such purpose, consisting of ears 13 and 1 1 on the block and coupler-head, is detachably connected by a wire or split pin 15.
The pivot-pin may be supported, as shown in Fig. 6, by means of a bolt or split key 16, passing through a portion of the lug 13 on the coupler and through the pivot-pin. When using this construction, it is preferred to form an annular rib 17 around the opening for the pivot-pin on the under side of the lug 9 of the coupler-head, as shown. As the key will lock the pin as against upward as Well as downward movement, a head or enlargement on its lower end is unnecessary.
It will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that by thus supporting or looking the pivot pin its accidental displacement is prevented and it can be readily removed upward without disturbing the shifting of any other part of the coupler-head.
I claim herein as my invention 1. The combination of a coupler-head, a swinging hook or knuckle, and a down Wardly removable pivot-pin connecting the knuckle to the head, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a couplerhead, a swinging hook or knuckle. a downwardly-rem able pivot-pin and a lock or keeper for holding the pin in operative position, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a coupler-head, a swinging hook or knuckle, a downwardly'removable pivot-pin, a keeper movable transversely of the pin into engagement with the coupler-head and into position under the pivotpin, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a coupler-head a swinging hook or knuckle, a downwardly-removable pivot-pun sup porting-lugs formed on the under side of the coupler-head and a block movable transversely of the pin into engagement with the l'i'lgs and into position to support the pin, sul'istantially as set forth.
