PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK L. WINTERS, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
- REMOVABLE COVER AND HOLDER FOR PASS AND SALES BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,476, dated February 14, 1905.
Application filed February 2, 1904; $erial No. 191,661.
.nTQ pZ Z/gruhmn it may concern.-
Be it known thatl, FRANK L. WnWrnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of and comprising two members hinged together at one side of the cover, said members being so related and formed that a portion of the one will constitute a fulcrum and the other a lever for temporarily relieving the clamping action of the cover and holder on the leaves or pads therein to permit the Withdrawal thereof and the substitution of others.
Novel details in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part'h'ereof,
I wherein a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the cover and holder. Fig. 2 is a bottom edge view showing the normal relation of the cover to the pad or leaves therein, and Fig. 3 is a view of the cover opened to release the pad or leaves.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to corresponding parts in the several views, A designates the back member of the cover and holder, which is preferably formed of rigid material, such as sheet metal, and B is the front member thereof, formed of similar material. The back member is bent back upon itself, as at 6, to form an arch and has its forward portion depressed, as at Z), to form a clamping-rib, the material from which the back is formed being of a springy character, whereby said rib may firmly clamp the leaves or book C between the same and the inner surface of the back proper, as clearly seen in Fig. 2. The cover is hinged to the forward edge of the return portion of the back, as at D, and the relative arrangement is such that when the front is opened, as in Fig. 3, the same may constitute a lever bearing upon the portion 6 of the back member, which constitutes a fulcrum for said lever, whereby the same will elevate the clamping-rib b from the book or leaves to release the same, as is obvious.
It is to be understood that slight changes in the special construction herein disclosed may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A two-part detachable book cover or holder, comprising top and bottom members formed of rigid material, the bottom member being flat throughout its lower portion and bent back upon itself at one edge to form a horizontally-disposed spring-arch at the back of the holder, the free edge of the return portion of said bottom member bending downwardly from said arch and rounded to constitute a smooth bearing, said lower portion and bentback portion being integral, and a pivot connection between the top member and the edge of the return portion of the bottom member, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK L. WINTERS. Witnesses:
FRED WILSON,
MARIE NAYLoR.
