Description

@uitrit -ttt @attent @frn WILLIAM DE CAMP, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND A. R. E. FALGK, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 78,363, dated May 26, 1868.
` IMPROVED PARING-KNIPE FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM DE CAMP,'ot` the city of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of vNew Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Paring-Kniv'es for Trim-ming the Soles of Boots' and Shoes; and l do declare the following to be a full. and exact description of the same, reference being had herein to -the drawings that accompany this specication `as `part of the s anle. i
The nature of my improvement consists in a peculiar guide and guard, adjustable to any thicknesslof sole, l for a paring-knife, and which insures an avoidance of cutting the upper leather of theboot or shoe. In the drawings- Figure 1 is the complete tool.
Figure 2 denotes the adjusting-wedge to guide the'd'epth of the out by the knife.
Figure 3 shows the adjustable guard to accommodate varied thiclnessof soles.
The same letters, refer to the same part in each figure. i v
A handle, A, of wood or other suitable material, is made with an end of the requiredlength, having a groove, Z, therein'.
A. thin metallic piece, y, is attached to the extremo end ofthe slot or grooved handle, against which the point of `the knife B impinges, being held thereto by the spiral `spring W on the shank of the knife, the knife being removed, when necessary, by nnhooking the cap-piece D.. The edge of the piece y when in use is inserted between the sole and the upper leather in the joint, and, when pressedto the bottom, guides and regulates'tbe cutting by the knife. The piece y being between the point of the knife and the upper, there is no danger of cutting the upper-leather. l
' The knife B passes through, fitting in the adjustable guide-piece V. -This piece is moved to and frate accommodate it to varied thickness of soles by means ofthe screw S and the thumb-nut ron the end of the handle A, a thread being out for the screw through the shank ofthe piece/V at n', iig. 3.
To lower or heighten the point of the knife, a wedge, C, is movable under the shoulders of V, the wedge being held in place by the thumb-nut p, and the adjustable guide by the thumb-nut g. Y
The screw S passes loosely through the shankof the wedge C, at o.
What I claim, and desire to secure, is- A Y The handle A', guide-piece y, adjuster V, wodgc'G, knife B, and the screw S, all combined, constructed, and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose specitied and shown.
WILLIAM DE CAMP.
