Bc known that l, RICIARD C. FLEMING, of "Philndelphia, in the 'county of Philadelphia, and State of lcnnsvlvnnia, have invented o. new nndiinproved Vent for Barrels; and 'I do hereby dechire that tlcfollowing is n. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the u rtito make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification;
Figure 1`reprcsen'ts-a sectional elevatiozrof iny invention, before it is inserted in o. barrel.
Figure 2 is a. sectional elevation of tho sanne, showing it inserted in a barrel.
Figure 3 is a. detail sectional vicwvof the upper part of Vthe same, in a, reversed position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v i
This invcntion'relatcs to n new device 'for preserving beer, ale', andothor liquids, and consists in a. novel manner of inserting in the barrel, and of inflating, an expansivebagwhich is to be ylled with air, and which, us
v'the liquid is being gradually withdrawn, is becoming lillod,;and fills the (faciinlu which is creatcdin the barrel by The cl'rsclmrgc of tlgevifentsl The 'gir-is theely not brought-in Gentech with. the. remaining contents ef-.tlicv barrel', and the .same will therefore retain-'their original quality.
A, in the drawing. represen-ts a metal ring, screwed into the bung-hole of a' barrel, and fitted with internal screw-thread orv otherwise, to tit it for the reception of a plug, D, by mens of which the barrel'is closed, during transportation, and as long :1s the contents areto remain undisturbed.
As soon as the barrel is to be opened, a. valve, C, is screwed into the ring A, as in tig. 2. The plugB may for this purpose be either previously removed, ormay be fitted at its upper end so that it will be screwed into the barrel, by ineens ofthe tube C, as indica-ted in iig.. 1. The plug will in the latter case remain in the barrel,
and can be discharged when the barrel isjelnpty by unscrcwing the ring A, and by thfen dropping the plug out.
l) is :m elastic o r other' expansible bug, which is attached to the lower end of :t hollow rod, E, and which' i can b e l-rawn intoV the tube A:is in iig. 1. Whenjthc tube G is'screwed into the ring A, as in iig. `2, the'redE is pushed downward until thel bag is suspended within the barrel.
`l? is :t pair ofbellows ttcd npon the .upper endof the-rod E, as shown. `lly expanding the bellows, as in iig-2, the weight of its upp'er'block, a, will s ullice to contract it again if a. vacuum should beV produced by drawing off some of the liquid in the'barrel, and thus before the faucet is opened, it is only necessaryv to expand the bellows, when they will automatically lill the bag, as longras bfeer is being drawn olf.
By revcrsingthebellows on the rod E, as in iigf, so that its valves. open upward, they can be usedfor pumping the air lout of a. filled bag and of an empty barrel.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters latent- 4 o 1., The Combination of the screwhring'A with the tube, tubular rod'lu, and ybag D, all madeand operating substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The bellows F,1in cot/nbination with the device sctfo'rth in the foregoing"r clause.
