PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS A. WINSLOVV, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE VVINSLOV BROS. COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPO- RATION OF ILLINOIS.
STAIFI.I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,065, dated May 30, 1905,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. WINsLow, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stairs; and its object is to produce a device of this class which shall have certain advantages which will appear Inore fully and at large in the course of this speciiication.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features, which are shown in the accompanying drawings as embodied in my preferred form of construction.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a portion of my improved stairway; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, the cement or filling material being removed.
Referring to the drawings, A is one of the side plates of my improved stairway, and the same is preferably constructed of metal and may be of any desired form. The risers B of my stairway are provided with rearwardlyprojecting ears b b, Fig. 2, and dotted lines, Fig. 1, through which are passed bolts to secure the risers to the side plates A. Each riser has at its lower edge a diagonally-disposed portion B, the upper face of which is preferably curved, so that the stairway can be readily cleaned. The upper edge of each riser is provided with a forwardly-extending portion B2, which gives a broader tread to the stair and provides it with an ornamental finish.
The diagonally-disposed portions B are provided with notches b2 b3 on their upper and lower edges, respectively, and after the risers are secured to the side plates sheet- Application led March 27, 1905. Serial No. 252.193.
metal plates C are sprung into place between theadjacent notches on the risers, thereby forming upwardly-curved metal arches. After these plates have been sprung into place the spaces upon them are filled in with concrete to the level of the tread or, if desired, a suitable top finish used. This construction, it will be observed, produces a particularly strong stairway with a minimum amount of labor. All that it is necessary to do is to bolt the risers into place and spring in the plates C to complete the metal work of the stair.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form herein shown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a plurality of risers secured at their ends to suitable supports, of a plurality of metal arches engaging notches at the lower edges of the risers and bodies of plastic material upon said arches.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a plurality of risers suported at their ends and provided at their ower edges with longitudinal notches, of upwardly-bowed meta lic plates sprung into place between said notches and bodies ofplastic material upon said plates.
YIn witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 21st day of March, A. D. 1905.
FRANCIS A. WINSLOW.
