SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,241, dated July 11, 1905,

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEAN BAPTISTE PARFAIT MIOHAUD, a subject of the King of England, residing at Eganville, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to windows, and more particularly to the holders for the sashes thereof, and has for its object to provide a holder by means of which the window-sash may be held in its closed position or at different points in its path of movement.

A further object is to provide a holder which may be manufactured at a low figure and in which a portion of the holder will also form a window-lift.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a view of a window, showing a sash thereof provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the grip removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of grip. Fig. 5 is a view showing the modified form of grip applied to a window and illustrating the lock in inoperative position. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a latch member to be used when the device is used as a look only.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a sash 5. To the bottom rail 6 thereof there is secured adjacent to one end of the rail a spring-rod 7, which is attached at one of its ends by means of a screw 8. At its remaining end the rod 7 is pivotally connected with a bolt 9, sliding in a sleeve 10, secured to the rail, the bolt when at the outward limit of its movement projecting beyond the edge of the sash in position to engage aplurality of openings 11 in a strip 12 interchangeably, this strip 12 being secured vertically to the window-frame. Centrally of the rail 6 there is secured a lift 13, including an attaching-plate let and a curved finger-piece 15, and the attaching-plate is provided with an outwardlyoffset vertically-extending portion 16, lying below the finger-piece 15, there being thus formed a passage 17 between the offset portions and a plate 18, secured to the rail 6 and against which the attaching-plate 14: is secured. The offset portion 16 is provided with a longitudinal slot 19, and in the passage 17 there is slidably disposed a member 20, having a finger 21 in its lower end which is curved into the form of an eye and which projects outwardly through the slot 19, and with this eye the rod 7 is engaged. The upper end of the member 20 is curved to conform with the finger-piece 15, so that when the finger-piece is grasped to raise the window the member 20 may be depressed with the thumb to move the bolt 9 out of engagement with the perforations 11.

In the modifications shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the lift consists of a plate 22, having the finger-piece 15 at its upper end and having its side portions bent inwardly over itself and spaced therefrom to form guides 23, the edge portions being cut away, as illustrated at 24, to form shoulders 25 adjacent to their lower ends. A sliding member 26 is provided, which consists of a metallic plate provided with notches 27 at opposite points at its sides, and the upper portion of the plate is curved outwardly on a line passing through the notches 27 to conform to the shape of the finger-piece 15. Below the notches 27 the edge portions of the plate are engaged in the guides 23, the edges of the plate 22 resting against the inner ends of the notches, while the upper portion above the notches lies forwardly of the inwardly-turned edge portions of the plate 22, as illustrated, the shoulders 25 acting as stops to limit the downward movement of the member 26.

The member 26 is provided with an eye 28 at its lower end similar in every way to the eye described in connection with the previous I form of the invention, and in this eye the rod 7 is engaged.

, The operation of the modifications will be readily understood without further explanation.

In Fig. 6 there is shown a member which may be used when theinvention is to be used as a look only on windows provided with other means for holding them at different points. As illustrated, this member is bent from a strip of metal and is provided with a tooth for engagement by the sliding bolt.

What is claimed is In a sash-fastener, the combination with means for holding a sash at diflerent points of its movement, of a plate arranged for attachment to a sash, said plate having its side edges bent forwardly and inwardly over itself to form guides, the upper portions of the edges of said inwardly-turned portions being cut away to form shoulders adjacent to the lower operation with the first-named finger-grip,

and an eye carried by the second-named plate, said sash-holding means being connected with the eye for operation of said means through movement of the plate.
