UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BARTON MULLEN AND TOBIAS PATHRIO MULLEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHAIR SEAT OR BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed March 21, 1905. Serial No. 251,189.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE BARTON MUL- LEN and ToBIAs PATHRIC MULLEN, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, Whitestone, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Chair Seat or Back, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to chairs and analogous furniture, our more particular object being to provide a removable member which may be used either as a seat or as a back and furnishing certain constructional advantages hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a chair equipped with our invention. Fig.
2 is a central vertical section through the Fig. 3 is a fragmentary central section through the seat of another chair equipped with another form of our invention, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of the seat-frame.
The frame of the chair-seat is shown at 5, and the frame of the chair-back at 6. At 7 8 are two removable plates substantially similar in design. The plate 7 is let into the frame 5 by means of a step 9, as indicated in Fig. 2. The plate 8 is similarly let into the frame 6 in the back of the chair by means of a step 10. The plates 7 and 8 are provided with large apertures 11, into each of which is fitted a frame 12, over which is stretched a bindingcloth 13 and an outer wearing cloth 14:. Screws 15 connect the frames 12 with the plates 7 and 8 and'are secured upon the inside by means of nuts 16. Projecting inwardly from each frame 12 is a continuous flange 17, provided with holes 18 for the purpose of mounting upon the flange a cane or wicker-work bottom, which may be employed instead of the outer wearing-cloth 14 and the lining 13, if desired.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 the seat-frame appears at 19, and fitting snugly into it is a plate 20, provided with a beveled flange 21. Mounted within the frame 20 and fitting the same snugly is a rectangular frame 25, which supports a cane or wicker-work bottom 26.
This bottom is connected with the frame by means of the flange 27, provided for the purpose. Screw-bolts 23, provided with nuts 24:, pass through the frames 20 and 25, thereby sustaining the frame last mentioned in position. is to provide the plate 20 with a portion projecting over the seat-frame 19, so as to give the plate 20 a solid support and yet avoid the occurrence of sharp angles upon the chairseat.
Achair constructed as above described possesses great strength. The bolts or screws 15 hold firmly together the parts which they engage, and the plates 7, 8, and 20 serve as corner-braces for the surrounding parts.
Having thus described our" invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The purpose of beveling the flange 21' 1. In a device of the character described,
flange thus projecting inwardly, and a seat frame encircling said plate.
2. The combination of a rectangular seatframe, provided with a central aperture, a plate mounted within said central aperture and provided with a beveled flange extending outwardly therefrom, "said beveled flange resting upon said seat-frame, a second frame mounted within said frame first mentioned,
and bolts'for connecting said frames together.
3. The combination of a seat-frame pro vided with a central aperture, a plate provided with a beveled flange and disposed within said seat-frame, said beveled flange projecting over a portion of said seat-frame, said plate being provided with a central aperture, and a member mounted within said central aperture for supporting a bottom of wicker-work or the like.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE BARTON MULLEN. TOBIAS PATHRIO MULLEN. Witnesses:
