Description

DYER W. PERRY, OF KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BADGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1906.
Application filed May 25, 1905. Serial No. 262,176.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DYER W. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene, county of Cheshire, and State of New Hamp shire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying the same.
The objects of my invention are as follows: to provide a badge that may be easily attached and detached from any portion of the clothing of the wearer and that will not be liable to be accidentally detached; to provide a badge that may be used as a society badge, as well as for the purposes of identification of the wearer in case of accident, and, lastly, to so construct the badge that the inscription placed thereon for identification will not be exposed to the action of the elements and defaced in case of accident to the wearer by drowning, fire, or other causes, that will not be exposed to Wear when Worn attached to the inner clothing, and that will be concealed from ordinary observation.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved badge as attached to an article of clothing. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation through line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the shank of my badge as detached from the other portion. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the cover or outside of the badge when detached from the other portions. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the inside inscription-plate as detached. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of a retaining-spring to hold the inscription-plate in place on the cover, and Fig. 7 is a plan view of the retaining-sprmg.
In the drawings, 1 represents the shank of the badge, Which is provided with a threaded portion 2 and which may have cast on its inner face the projecting points 3 3, arranged to engage the fabric of the clothing to prevent said shank portion 1 from turning when the cover is screwed thereon.
4 represents the cover or outside of the badge, which is provided with the internal screw-threaded portion 5, the overlapping flange 6, and the recesses 7. The face 8 of the cover 4 may have engraved or inscribed on it the insignia of any society or any other inscription that may be desired.
, 9 is what may be termed an identification-plate, upon which may be engraved the name, residence, date of birth of the wearer, or any other desired matter and has centrally located therein the opening 16, which is adapted to pass over the rim 13 of the cover 4.
11 is a retaining-spring which is provided with the elongated hole 12, which is slightly narrower across its shortest distance than the slightly-projecting rim 13 'of the cover 4, so that when pressed over said rim 13 it will not come off through shock, due to a blow on said cover 4.
14 represents a section of fabric to illustrate the method of attaching my improved badge to the clothing of the wearer.
In practice, as has been before stated, the identification-inscription should be engraved or inscribed upon one of the faces, as 10, of the inscription-plate 9, and in putting together the badge said inscription should lie against the face 15 of the cover 4. The spring 11 is then pressed over the rim 13, thereby firmly holding the inner face of the inscription-plate 10 against the wall 15 of the cover 4 in such manner as to shield it from exposure to fire or salt water in case of accident and also to shield it against wear incident to use, so that any inscription placed on the face of the inscription-plate 9, which lies against the inside face of the cover 4, would remain thereon practically for an indefinite period.
To attach the badge to a piece of fabric, the inscription-plate and spring are placed on the cover, as before described, the threaded portion 2 of the shank 1 is pressed through a hole in the fabric, and the cover 4 screwed tightly thereon. The friction of the flange 6 of said cover, with the fabric upon one side and the contact of the points 3 3 with the fabric on the other side, will securely hold the badge in place against any accidental displacement.
I claimmember formed to spring over the rib of the An article of manufacture, consisting of a projecting central portion of the cover-plate badge having a shank member provided With to retain the inscription-plate in place. a threaded stud and projection; a cover-plate In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 5 having an inwardly-projecting central por my hand, in the presence of tWo subscribing 15 tion internally threaded; a projecting rim on Witnesses, this the 20th day of May, 1905.
said central projecting portion; an annular DYER W. PERRY. inwardly-projecting rim on said cover-plate; Witnesses an inscription-disk formed to fit Within the HIRAM BLAKE,
1o annular rim of the cover-plate; and a spring JOSEPH MADDEN.
