RAILROAD-CAR STOVE.
Gite seam rttemt it in time itttters $211M mm making out at flgt tam.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
-Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. AL'LEN, of Medina, in the county of Orleans, and State of'New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement jn Safety Railroad-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front view of my stove, with the door of the protector or-frame open.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same on the line fix, fig. 1.
7 My invention consists in a peculiar construction of double door, provided with a lock and screen,in combi-, nation with a stove having another screen in the flue; and also in the combination of the above with a novel construction of stove-protector. 1
.In the construction of my improved stove, 1 make the plates P, fig. 2, of cast malleable iron, about onehalf inch in thickness, but I do not limit my invention to the form or material of the body of the stove. These plates, P, may be strongly bolted together. The grate may be made of curved bars, G, fig. 2, and the fuel may be either wood or'coal.
The door of. the stove is made with two plates, as seen at H and B, fig. 2. Between these two plates is placed a screen of wire cloth or net-work, as shown at E, the plates H and B supporting such screen on both sides. The plate E has perforations or air-holes,'e, and the plate 13 is provided with draught-openings, b, which may be op eneclor closed by a damper in the usual manner. The lower part of plate B projects downwardin front of the ash-pan C, so as to fasten the latter when the door is shut.
I prefer hanging the two plates,'H and B, on two separate setsof hinges, yet this is not essential.
The double door or outer plate, 13, is fastened by a lock, D, so'that no jarring of the cars or collision will openthe stove-door. i
In the flue of my stove is inserted a screen, F, held firmly in place by plates, I, fig. 2.
The above construction of door and this secures a good draught to the stove, and at the same time the screen may be made so close and strong that it is almost impossible for fire to escape from the stove.
In order to prevent passengers fI'OlIl belHg burned by the stove in case of collision, my stove is protected by a grating, A, which may be made of strong bars of iron, say one and a half inch thick (square) These-bars are bolted or riveted together by rivets, a, and also bolted to the bottom of the car. The stove is also bolted down to the floor, and may be otherwise secured in place, if necessary. The grating or protector has a door, A, which should be closed securely by a look or other suitable means.
This protector having great strength, cannot easily be wrested from its place, and by completely surrounding the stove, will keep the passengers from being burned; alsd, it will serve in some degree to strengthen the .bottom of the car,'and prevent the store from being thrust from its place.
I do not broadly claim a screen in the door, or covering the flue of a stove, but I believe my arrangement,
construction, and combination of double-locked door with the above flue and body of the stove, togetherform .a new and useful improvement in stoves. Neither do I broadly claim a protector for stoves, but confine my invention, in this respect, to the above novel construction of protector.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the above-described double door, having plates, H and B, and screen, E, and provided with a look, D, with the body of the stove'and the fine, with the screen F therein, all being constructed and arranged substantially in the manner set forth.
WM. A. ALLEN.
