To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, MATHEW WASHINGTON BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in wood-burning stoves, and consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of stoves of this character, and thereby render the same more durable and convenient in use and less expensive to manufacture.

The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved wood-stove. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view; and Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the body of the stove, which is preferably of elliptical formand disposed above a rectangular box or casing 2. The wood is burned in the body 1, which forms the firebox of the stove and which is separated by a grate 3 from the box 2, which forms the ashreceptacle. This grate is formed by one or more bars, which cross an opening formed in the horizontal partition 4, which separates the parts 1 and 2. The wood is inserted into the fire-box or body 1 through an opening 5 in its top, a removable cap or cover 6 being provided for said opening. Projecting from the top of the body 1 is a smoke-pipe 7.

The rectangular ash-box 2 has its front end open to receive a sliding ash pan or receptacle 8. The latter is in the form of a rectangular tray or box adapted to slide into and out of the box 2 and having upon its front end a handle 9. This front end of the ash pan or tray projects beyond its sides and top to form flanges 10, and the flange at the central portion of its top is bent inwardly, as shown at 12, to clear the projecting outer end 13 of a slide 14. The latter is in the form of a plate mounted to slide in guides 15, provided upon the bottom of the partition or plate 4, and when moved into the box 2 is adapted to close the opening beneath the grate-bar 3. The outer end of the slide 13 is bent upwardly and curved, as shown, to form a handle for the same. The ash-pan 8 slides upon the bottom of the box 2, which bottom projects beyond the vertical walls of the box and is supported upon legs 16.

The construction, use, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that wood or other fuel may be placed in the body or fire-box 1 through its top opening 5 and that when ignited will readily burn within the same, the draft being regulated by adjusting the slide 14 and the ash pan or tray 8. When the slide 14 is drawn outwardly to entirely uncover the grate-opening, the ashes in the stove may be readily dropped into the ash pan or tray, which latter may then be removed from the boX 2 and then emptied.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prin ciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
