Description
CHARLES A. MOORE, 0F WESTBROK, CONNECTICUT.
Letters .Patent No. 85,020, dated December 15, 1868.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Grnsnnns A. MOORE, of Westbrook, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Connec'ticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture VAof AKnives and Forks, or table-eut# lery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference'being also had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in making a blade, with a slit or an opening, a! a, in the but-end, like or similar to that seen in g. l, and providing the same with a screw-thread. v
On to the said but-end, and over the slit, I slip the bolster, iig. 2, the said bolster'being east or made separate from the blade and tang, or stem; and through the bolster, and into the opening in the blades, I screw the tang or stem, iig. 3, the said tang being made separate from both bolster and blade, and provided with a screw-thread at the end.
To enable others skilled in the art to understandA and make the same, I will proceed to describe -my mode'of doing so. f
Figure 1 represents the blade, with an opening in the but-end, the said opening having a screw-thread cut in it. l
' Figure 2 shows the bolster,'and the said bolster has on the front or blade-ends a conical or similarlyformed projection, and the said 'projection is provided withan opening or a slit the width of the thickness of the blade at the but-end. The said opening or slit iscut or cast in the bolster. In iron or brass it may be cut with a small circular saw, and the end ofthe blade curved or formed, as seen in figs. 1 and 4, to fit-the Vcircleor curve. The back or handle-end ofthe bolster is providedwith ahole, in which is a screw-thread cut or formed. y y
Figure 3 shows thetang, with a screw-thread on it. The saidtang screws into the bolster and blade also, asseeninig.4. v Figure 4 shows the position of the blade, bolster, and tang, when united. I
Figure 5 shows the three united. Y The object ofthe conical projection in the bolster is to enable me to screw the tang into .the blade, in
order to secure strength.
It also conceals the opening iu the blade, and increases the strength of the whole, and besides, it is count. My invention enables himto remove, and send f to the factory to be cleaned, the part or parts that require it, either blade, bolster, or handle In plating, also, the bolster may be plated and the blade not; and blade, and bolster, and handle may be removed for plating.
My invention enables me to make the tang of wire, of uniform size, and smooth, and of any desired length or weight.
' By' my invention, also, no costly machinery is required in making cutlery, and a 'saving in material and labor is made. The blade .is easily made andfinished. The bolster maybe cast and turned. The tang, excepting the screw-thread, is ready made. The three parts, blade, bolster, and tan may be soldered or rivetedl together, orfboth solder d and riv-- eted, if desired, and no screw-threads cut.`
'What I claim, and desire tolsecure .by Letters Patent, is-
'The blade A, with the opening a a, bolster O, with projections?) b, andscrewtang D, all arranged vto operate as and for the purpose described.
tion by Letters Paten CHARLES A. MUORE.
vAnil I desire to secure the herein-describedv inven- Witnesses:
