Description
N. ERS. PrlomuTnoaRAPnEn. WASHINGTON, D, c.
die,
@i A QW ahmed, 5ime o. B. COLLINS, or CARTHAGE LANDING, NEW YORK;
Letters Patent No. 85,071, dated December 22, 1868. I
IMPRovED FURNITURE-TIP.
* wQ- gn The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that-I, O. B..GOLLINs, of Carthage Lauding, in the county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furniture-Tips; and I do hereby declare that the follow.- ing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of' this specification. l
The present invention relates to a new and useful improvement in furniture-tips, which areintended to take' the place of the ordinary casters now in use.
The construction and mode of attaching the same to the legs of tables, 8m., will be clearly understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciication, in which- Figure 1 represents a side View of my improved furnlilture-tip, showing the same attached to the leg of a c air. l
Figure 2 is a plan of the same, (bottom side up,) with the India rubber removed.
Similar letters o f reference indicate corresponding. parts.
In this case the letter a represents a metallicbutton, whose base is made in the form of an octagon, or other suitable shape, so as to enable it tobe screwed. to the legs of chairs, tables, solas, bedsteads, or other articles o f household-furniture, by means of a suitable key, which shall be made toV correspond with the peculiar shape oi the base of the vsaid button.
bl represents India rubber,'which is run around and over the button, as clearly shown in iig. 1 of the au companying drawing, and which will be held secure` from the'peculiar shape of the button, so that-there will be no danger of the India rubber getting loose, or coming oii, from tipping the chair back. and only using the two hindermost legs, as is practised so much at the present time, particularly in saloons, and will, at the vsame time, give the seat a comfortable and easy footrest,"which will neither slip' nor squeak on the floor, when moving the same from vplace to place in a room;
By my method of constructing the tip, thescrew fo! securing it to 'the furniture-leg does not pass through the. rubber as in most cases', and for this reason, when the rubber becomes worn oi'to the base of the button, an-irregular and uneven surface, such asis formed by a serai-head, is not exposed, to tear .carpets and disgure ools.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- The furniture-tip,constructed, as described, ofthe grooved button a, around which the India-rubber block vb is cast, whereby, when said rubber becomes worn ofi,
a smooth, even bearing-surface is presented, to avoid injury to carpets and floors, as herein shown audvdescribed.
' The-above specification of my inventionsi'gned by me, this 30th day of March, 1868; 0. B. GOLLINS.
