To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JQFRANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Three-Phase Transformers, of which the following is a s ecification.
My invention relates to t rec-phase transformers of the shell type, and its object is to provide a novel construction which will permit the use in oil-cooled transformers of a tank or casing circular in cross-section, without employing an unnecessarily large amount of oil. The use of round tanks is particularly desirable where forced circulation of oil is emplo ed and the oil in the transformer is therefbre under considerable pressure, since under these circumstances a tank which is not circular in cross-section is apt to become distorted from the 0il-pressure.
In the construction ofthreephase shell type transformers it has ordinarily been the practice heretofore to arrange the three windings with their axes in alinement. With this arrangement of windings the core is considerably longer than broad, so that a tank of circular cross-section cannot be used without an unnecessarily large amount of oil.
My invention consists in placing one of the three windings with its axis perpendicular to the line joining the centers of the other two windings. I thereby obtain a core which is much more nearly square than the usual construction, so that a-circular tank ngaylbe used with a much smaller amount o 01 My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a plan view of a trans former arranged in accordance with my invided with a erture's in which the windings B, B and arranged in the usual manner with their axes in alinement, but the winding B is placed with its axis at right-angles to the other two, and midway between the other two windings. This arrangement, as is evident in Fig. 1, gives a core construction which is much more nearly square than would be the case if the third winding were placed with its axis in alinement with the other two, as in the usual construction. Consequently, a circular tank or casing C may be employed without an unnecessarily large amount of oil.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,
1. A three-phase transformer of the shell type comprising a magnetic core, and three windings arranged in apertures in said core, one winding having its axis per endicular to the line joining the centers 0 the other two windings.
2. A three phase transformer of the shell type comprising a magnetic core, three windings arranged in apertures in said core, one winding having its axis perpendicular to the line joining the centers of the other windings, and a casing of circular cross-section adapted to contain said core.
3. A three phase transformer of the shell type comprising a magnetic core, and three windings arranged in apertures in said core, two of said windings being axiallyalined and the third having its axis perpendicular to the axis of the other two.
