WIRE FOR MAKING PILE IN WOVEN FABRICS.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ERAs'rUs B. BIGELow, of Clinton, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Pile or Figuring IVires Employed in the Weaving of Brussels Carpets and other Piled Fabrics, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a front elevation of the said improved wire; Fig. 2, an end elevation; andF ig. 3, a cross vertical section.

The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.

In the Weaving of piled or looped fabrics, particularly carpets, it has been found important to make the wires flat, and to weave them into the fabric edgewise, so as to nia-ke the pile of greater height, for a given distance between the picks, than could be done with round wires, and this is particularly important when applied to the weaving of cut-pile fabrics, because the wire for such fabrics is grooved along the upper edge, to admit of the passage of the knife or cutter for cutting the pile, without bringing the cutting edge in contact with the metallic surface o-f the pile wire. In operating with such flat wires, it has been found diflicult to preserve the posit-ion of the wires between the warps, before the pile is completely formed over them, particularly when the wires are o-perated by automatic pincers.

The object of my invention is to remedy this difculty, and to this end the nature of my invention consists in combining with the 8,539, dated November 25, 1851.

flat pile or figuring wire, employed in the weaving of looped or piled fabrics, and attached to one end thereof, a weight project` ing from the lower edge, so that when such wires are deposited in the open shed of the wai-ps, and during the operation of beating up with the lay, the preponderance f the said weight shall retain the wire in the proper position.

In the accompanying drawings a, represents the wire, which is flattened and grooved along the upper edge, in the manner of making pile or figuring wire, for looped fabrics. To that end of the wire which is gripped in the operation of transferring, and a little within the end, there is attached a flat weight o, projecting downward from the lower edge. This weight should be so thin, as to admit of the weaving into the fabric a series of such wires, and therefore it should project suiiiciently below the lower edge of the wire as to give the required prepondern ance to the lower edge, and insure the proper position of the wire between the warps.

I do not limit myself to any particular form or mode of attaching the weight, as this may be variously modified.

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Combining with the flat pile or figuring wire employed in weaving looped or piled fabrics, and attached to, or near one end thereof, a weight, for the purpose and in the manner substantially as described.
