Be it known that I, WALTER S. ALvEs, a

citizen of the United States, residing at llenderson, in the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to gunstocks.

The object of my invention is the production of gunstocks having particular construction whereby it is believed the users are enabled to more accurately, more quickly, and more conveniently aim the pieces, than it is practicable for them to do when using gunstocks having the forms and construction with which I am acquainted.

I accomplish the object stated by fashioning a gunstock as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 represents a side view of a solid butt with a portion of the breech end of the barrels. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the parts shown'in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross section of those parts on line au a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a side view of a gunstock constructed in accordance with my invention and provided with a check cushion. Fig. 5 is a top plan of the construction shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 represents a cross section of that construction on line y of Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 is a like cross section of the butt with the cushion and its block omitted.

Like letters of reference are employed to designate the same parts in the description and drawings.

The letter A designates the barrel or barrels of a gun, letter B refers to the fore end. and Cis the usual pistol grip of the stock. The butt of the stock is marked D. The upper edge or comb of the stock is marked E, and for purposes of explanation hereinafter, two points upon the comb E are indicated by small letters 6, c.

It will be noted in Figs. 1 and 4 that toward the upper point of the shoulder-piece or heel d of the butt, the comb line E rises. The reason for this construction is that the cheek rest surface is somewhat below the heel. In other words, considering, for example, Fig. 1, the shoulder-piece is shown of ordinary length and position, its upper end at the heel of the butt being relatively higher than the comb line E or cheelerest surface. If in the construction of my invention, the comb line E were continued straight out, the shoulder piece would be shortened.

In some instances, the area of the shoulderpiece would be much. reduced and the recoil of the gun would cause real inconvenience. I do not reduce the regular size or extent of the should er-piece in any way.

Slightly elow the comb edge is the cheek rest F, and the line of the cheek rest is shown in the plan views Figs. 2 and 5. A portion of that line or curved surface of the cheek rest is to he mentioned in this explanation and such portion is delimited by two points thereon indicated by the small letters f, f.

In Fig. 3 and also in Fig. 6, both being cross-sections of my invention, it is shown that the upper portion of the butt D is thicker than the lower part. By reason of that construction the line f -f and the adjacent surface designated herein as the cheek rest, that is to say, the surface in contact with the cheek under normal aiming conditions, projects beyond the lower extent of the surface of the side of the butt toward the face of the gunner. The prominence thus given the cheek rest surface materially assists the person in bringing his head to rest against the portion and surface of the butt designed for the purpose, and enables proper and accurate aim to be almost instantly taken.

In Fig. 4 my invention is shown provided with a cheek cushion G, the comb edge, and the terminal points of the portion or extent of that edge referred to in this description are designated by the letters g, g, corresponding to the marked points 6, c, in Fig, 1. In Fig. 5, the curved surface or line of the cushion on which the cheek rests is identical in form and position with the corresponding surface of the solid stock illustrated in Fig. 2, and the same reference letters are employed to indicate the terminal points.

Fig. 6 represents a cross section of the butt of tilt? stock, with the cushion applied. The top edge of the butt is recessed as shown in Fig. 7, and indicated by broken lines in Fig. 4, and the bottom of the recess is marked H. The side of thestock is also provided with a recess J. Into the recess in the top edge or comb of the stock there is placed the lip or overhang K of the cushion block which carries the cushion G, and the body I. of the cushion block fits the recess J in the side of the stock. The cushion block is secured in place by screws M, and is thus removable, if desired.

Having now escribed my invention, and explained the mode of its operation, What I claim is- 1.
