STANLEY O. SLATER, OF BOLTON, ENGLAND.
SURGICAL SPLINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed January 21, 1907- Serial No. 353,308.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY CAMERON SLATER, British subject, and resident of B01- ton, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Splints, of which the A following is a specification.
This mvention relates to certain improvements in surgical splints to render them adsplint arranged as a hip splint. Fig. 2. is a sectional elevation of one end of the tubular rod showing the means for securing the parts together. Fig. 3. is an elevation of lower extension end forming a knee splint. Fig. 4. is a sectional plan of same. Fig. 5. is an elevation of lower extension end comprising two rods to engage an ordinary boot.
The splint or appliance is constructed with two tubular rods A the ends of which are slitted at a and externally provided with a screw thread to which are attached at one end a hip pad or girth B by rods I) attached thereto, and at the other end a rest C or patten C by rods 0.
The ends of the tubular rods are tapered and fitted with tapering nuts D by which the ends can be contracted to grip or engage the rods b or c inserted therein.
The rods b are firmly affixed to the hip pad B and pass down into the tubular rods A where they can be adjusted to any desired position and firmly clamped by the nuts D. Likewise the rods 0 affixed to the rest 0 or patten C pass into the tubular rods A at the other end and when adjusted are clamped by the nuts D.
l he base of the rest C is rigidly aflixed to the rods 0 and is preferably circular and the patten is hinged or pivoted on pins 0 so that it may be adjusted to any angle.
Separate rods 0 may be employed to affix to a boot or shoe E.
To the hip pad or girth B a bar F maybe attached to connect it with a body girth or belt G provided with a strap and buckle or other fastening device to secure the splint to the body of the wearer. To insure the body girth, or belt G being comfortable to the u earer it is padded and covered with chamois leather or other suitable covering.
A piece H of canvas or other flexible material is attached to the two metallic tubes A to form a support and attachment by which to adjust the splint to the leg of the patient.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a surgical splint the combination with two tubular rods each slit at the ends and provided with screws and nuts to screw thereon of a hip pad, rods projecting therefrom to enter the hollow rods A and capable of adjustment therein, and a foot rest with rods to enter the other ends of the hollow rods and be secured therein substantially as described and shown.
2. In a surgical splint the combination with two tubular rods each slit at the ends and provided with screws, and nuts to screw thereon of a hip pad, rods projecting therefrom to enter the hollow rods A and capable of adjustment therein, and a foot rest with rods to enter the other ends of the hollow rods and be secured therein, abody girth and a bar to attach it to the hip pad, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
S. C. SLATER.
