In use as aineans for raising'or lowering a tube A, it is to be understood that the chain 14 isa dpendent portion ofthe usual rigging or tacl e employed-therefor, so that the im proved tongs will be suspended in a proper position for/en agement with one or more sections of a we l tube A'that is to be raisedor lowered It willl be seen that if the jaws 10a are diverged to their limit, and so retained by the tripping link, that is arranged as shown in` Fig. 1, the tube A may be' engaged therewith by inserting it endwise between. the jaws, or Ythe upright tube may receive the tongs at the upper end thereof, to adapt the jaws 10l for grip in a pipe or rod whereon they are mounte t e link members 15 are flexed at A their joint by a pull on the chain, then if the tongs are raised by' the tackle, the jaws 10a will grip the tube between the recesses d, and
hold said tube firmly without marring its surface, so that the tube maybe disposed verticallv and lowered down into a well bore. In alike manner, a tube that is to be withdrawn from a well bore may be gripped' by the improved tongs, and upon applying draft strain the tongs will firmly hold the tube until it is to be released therefrom.
It is evident that the improvement may also be utilized lfor grabbing other articles than such as are cylindrical, 'as the j aws 10a may be a plied upon structural beams of different s apes, and detachably secure such beams upon a lifting tackle for handling such material during the work of erecting a structure it is to be iliade a portion of, and to this end the serrations c serve to insure a, tight grip of the jaws 1()lL thereupon. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. 3. In a device of the character described,
the tripping link, comprising two main sections, a rule joint connection between adjacent ends of said sections, the bodies of said sections being recessed, and an -extensifn member adjustably secured in the recess of a respective section, the outer ends ofthe exioo the lever bars than the other, an integral j aw projected laterally from a corresponding end of each lever bar, the opposite edges of said jaws being substantially parallel with each other, said edges, near their centers, having oppositely scalloped recesses therein'and also having serrations in portions outside of the recesses, a tripping link pivoted by its ends upon the res ect-ive lever bars above the ivot connection of the latter, said link emodyingtwo main sections, a downwardly flexing rule joint connection joining adjacent ends of the link sections, said jointhaving an eye-bolt for a pivot, and a flexible connection extending from the rule joint downward.
