Description

ml I G/ K/o y v t" stimmt gieten' Patent (titten.
GEORGE vv. WARREN, ORALMA, NEW YORK.
Lotte/rs .Patent No. 89,098, dated April 20,1869.
IMIPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WARREN, of Alma, in the county of Alleghany, and State of New York, have invented a cert-ain new and useful Improvement in Chums; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation, and
Figure 2 a horizontal section of the barrel, with the dasher situated therein.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
My improved churn belongs to that class where the churn body, or barrel is made to revolve around a stationary dasher inside, and where the moving power is a. weight.
The invention consists in combining with the dasherrod a vertically-acting key, which serves the double purpose of retaining the dasher against revolviuga'nd holding it to form the upper axis, or bearing of the revolving barrel.
It further consists in the arrangement of the mechanism as a whole.
In the drawings- A indicates a suitable frame, in one end of which is mounted a revolving barrel, or churn body B, receiving motion by a train of gears, 1 2 3, mounted on shafts a l), acting on a cog-rim, 4, encircling the middle ofthe barrel.
A cord, c, winds ou shaft a, and, passing over pnlley (Z, has a weight, f, attached, which imparts the moving power.
A crank, ,6, enables the cord to be wound up at any time.
The barrel rests and turns at the bottom on a pointed Inside it has a dasher, O, whose rod lt passes up This key, thus arranged, serves two special purposes-first, by striking into the socket It', it holds the dasher against turning while the barrel is revolved around it; and, second, when shut down it forms a stiff connection with the l rod, and thus serves as the upper axis, or bearing' around which the barrel moves.
I am aware that it is common in churns, where the barrel is stationary and the dashcr revolves, to employ a key or other device simply to connect and disconnect t-he action of the dasher.
Such is not the equivalent of my arrangement, since but one purpose is served.
'lo produce the double action, as above described, requires a special arrangement of parts, viz: `a vertically-acting key, in line with the dasher-rod, a short flasher-rod extending just through the cover and a square socket connection.
These features I believe original with myself.
This arrangement allows a'u easy connection and disconnection ofthe barrel, by simply moving the key up or down. A
The general arrangement is simple and convenient. The central cog-rim around the barrel imparts an equal and uniform motion while the weight is,wouud up.
Vhai; I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the stationary dasher O and rotating-barrel B, of the vertically-sliding key k, the same being independent of the flasher, but preventing its rotation, and forming, with the dashershaft, the axis of the barrel, substantially as described. l2. The rotating-barrel B, having the operating and steadying cog-rim 4, encircling its middle, in combination with the gearing l 2 3, cord c, and weight f, when arranged and operating as described.
In witne ss whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.-
GEORGE W. WARREN. Witnesscs LUKE WARREN, ENOOH FARNHAM
