IMPROVED LASTING-PINCERS AND NAILER.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known that I, FRANK O. GLAFLIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Lasting-Instrument for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the. annexed drawing, making part of this specication, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of said instrument, with the lever and its cutting-die removed;

Figure 2 is a vertical section at the line x x; andY Figure 3 isa plan of said instrument. l Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. In Letters Patent granted to me, September 29, 1868, No. 82,599, a pair of lasting-pincers is shown,

'and combined with a device for driving a peg or nail.

My present invention. is a'n improvement upon the same, and consists in a means for feeding and cutting o a peg of twisted wire, or other material, and presenting the same to the punch that drives it into the leather, or other material.

In the drawingl Y and b are the jaws, and c c, the handles (a part only being shown) of the lasting-pincers of usual con` struction.

d is-a hollow head-block, fastened upon the jaw a, and carrying the driver or punch that is formed by the sliding rod e, head f, and punch i, the spring g being A employed to throw-up the punch-rod andhead.

The wire, or other material for vforming the peg, is wound upon a reel, h, that is supported by the arm k, and said wire leads through a hole in the side of the head-block d, a spring, Z, with a pressing-finger, being applied at this point to produce friction sufficient to keep the end of the wire from springing out.

The feed-movement of the wire is effected by the jaws -n and o, at the end of levers n o. The lever n' has its fulcrum at 2, and the lever o is jointed at 3 to the lever n.

A toggle-link, o, is jointed at 4 to the lever o' at one end, and at the other end to the bent lever s, that is set on the fulcrum 5, at the side of d.

Upon the slide e is a projection at one side, shown at 6, fig. 1, by dotted lines. This acts upon the lever s to straighten the toggle formed between said lever s and link lr, or else to draw up said parts and the lever o by taking beneath the upper end of the lever s.

A stop-screw, 7, is employed to limit the amount of the return movement. l

The spring u'a'lso acts to lift the levers n' o.

The slide e', as it is moved up and down, moves the wire by the clamps n o, to feed the same into the mafchine.

Therst movement of the slide being to straighten the toggle, presses the clamp o upon the wire, holding -it between o and n, and then projecting the wire down through a hole forming a die at v, and into the hollow die p, at the end of the lever q, thus feeding in the necessaryamount of wire, or other material, to form the peg. A

The upper end of the lever q is acted upon by the shoulder 8, upon the slide c, and this carries the die p across beneath the hollow die lv, cutting oii the wire forming the peg, and, in so doing, the hollow die p is brought under and in line with the punch i, that drives the peg into the leather, or other material, so that the movement of the slide, punch, and head, under a blow from the hand, or otherwise, effects all the operations of feeding the wire, cutting olf the peg, and driving said peg.

WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-

1. The feeding-jaws u o, actuated by the toggle r s,

and ,slide e, for feeding in the material to form the peg,

by pressing upon the head j' of the slide c, substantially as set forth.

2. The lever q and die p, in combination with the die o, and4 punch, or driver t, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. A
