To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'FRANK W. ROLLER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Plainfield, in the county-of Union an State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Glass- Cutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to glass cutters and particularly to a form in which aheated element is brought into contact with the glass and by the sudden expansion causes the glass to be cut or split on the line of the conductor.
By means of my invention, a simple, durable and convenient form of lass cutter is produced which may be rapi ly and easily manipulated.
It is particularly well adapted for cutting oif the ends of glass cylinders formed dur' mg the process of manufacture, but is also useful in cutting glass in other forms and for cutting some materials other than those of lass.
My invention will be understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, and is capable of embodiment in various forms of construction. I am therefore, not limited to the particular form shown,
and the appended claims will more definitely indicate the scope of my invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of a preferred form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is an end view; Fig. 4 is a part sectional view of some parts for showing the circuit connections being partly broken away to reduce the size of the figure; and Fig. 5 is a side view showing the device applied to a glass cylinder.
The device comprises a handle 1 of wood or other material having extended therefrom two parts 2, 2. Between the extensions 2, 2, is. mounted a reel '3 having its bearings in the side strips 4, 4. Secured 'to the shaft of the reel is a handle 5 and a ratchet wheel 6 both mounted outside of one of the strips 4, there being a washer 7 interposed between the Wheel 6 and the side strip. Pivoted on the handle is a latch 8 adapted to engage the ratchet wheel, A spring 9 tends to keep the latch in engagement with the ratchet and a handle 10-on the latch affords a convenient means for moving the latch outof engagement. Between the extensions 2, 2 are fixed two guides of metal 11, 11 each having a slot 12 to receive the ends of a pin 13, upon which a metallic guide wheel 14 is loosely mounted.
From each end of the pin 13 extends a spring 15, 15, the opposite ends of these springs being fixed to the guides 11, 11 as shown.
On one of the extensions 2 is a block 16 of angular form having pivoted to one side a part 17 with a handle 18. is moved toward the device, it will securely clamp a conductor between its end and the block 16. A conductor 19 is fixed at one end to the reel 3 and may be wound thereon by turning the handle 5. -'The conductor is preferably an iron wire. It passes fromuri- ,der the reel, over the guide wheel 14 and then after passing around the glass to be cut is brought to the clamp formed by .the parts 16, 17.
Current is led through the conductor from the leads 20, and a switch for opening and closing the circuit is conveniently located in the handle 1. This is shown as .a hinged wooden block 21 with a spring 22 tending to move it outward and a slotted strip and screw 23 for limiting its outward movement. The hinged block carries a contact 24 which bridges the contacts 25, 25 when the blockis moved inwardly. It also carries a contact 26 which engages the contact 27. One of the leads 20 is connected to contact 25 and the other to contact 27. From the contact 25 a lead extends through the handle to the block 16. The contact 26 is electrically connected to the hinge 28, from which latter a lead extends to the guides 1.1, 11. The handles 5, 10 and 18 may be insulated or of insulating material.
When the device is held in one hand, the handle 10 may be depressed by the thumb which releases the ratchet wheel and the wire 19 may then be freely pulled oft the reel and passed around the glass cylinder 29 to be cut; The free end is then secured in the clamp 16, 17. The handle 5 is then turned to take up any slack in the wire, and in doing this the guide wheel 14 is moved down between the guides 11, 11 against the tension of springs 15, 15 to the position shown'in Figs. 1 and 3; the latch now serving to prevent backward movement of the reel. A slight tapping of the glass may sometimes be necessary to secure its separation.
The advantages of the device in convenience and rapidity of manipulation are apparent.
Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric conductor, a clamp for securing one end of said conductor, and a pawl and ratchet device for regulating the effective length of said conductor, substantially as described.
2. In a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric cbnductor, a clamp for securing one endof said conductor, and a reel for regulating the effective length of said conductor, substantially as described.
3. In a glass cutter, the combination of a' handle, an electric conductor, a clamp for securing one end of said conductor, a reel for regulating the effective length of said conductor, and means for preventing the reel from turning in. one direction, substantially as described. v
4 In a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric conductor, a clamp for securing one end of said conductor, a reel for regulating the effective length of said conductor, and a ratchet and latch for preventving the reel from turning in one direction,-
substantially as described.
5. In a glass cutter, the combination of a support, an electric conductor, means for securing the ends of said conductor to said support and a yieldable guide over which said conductor passes, substantially as described.
6. In a glass cutter, the combination of a support, anelcctric conductor, means for securing the er ds of said conductor to said support and a yieldablc guide wheel over which said conductor passes, substantially as described.
7. In a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric conductor, a clamp for securingone end of said conductor, means for regulating the effective length of said con ductor, and a yieldable guide over which said conductor passes, substantially as described.
8. In a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric conductor, a clamp for securing one end of said conductor, a reel for regulating the effective length of said conductor, and a yieldableguide wheel over which saidconductor passes, substantially as described.
9. In. a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric conductor, a clamp for securing one end of said conductor, a reel for regulating the effective length of said conductor, a ratchet for preventing the"wheel from turning in one direction, and a yieldable guide wheel over which said conductor passes, substantially as described.
10. In a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric conductor, a clamp forsecuring one end of said conductor, means carried by said handle for; regulating the effective length of said conductor, and a switch for closing the circuit through said conductor, substantially as describedf 11. In a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric conductor, a' clamp for securing one end of said conductor, means for 100 regulating the effective length of said conductor, a yieldable guide over which said conductor passes, and a switch for closing the circuit throughsaid conductor, substantially as described.
14. In a glass cutter, the combination of a handle, an electric conductor, a clamp for securing one end of said conductor, a reel for regulating the ellective length of said conductor, a yieldable guide wheel over which 1 said conductor passes, and a switch for closing the circuit through said conductor, substantially as described.
15.
