FRANK HERMAN GOTSCHE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
TENT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 20, 1908. Serial No. 411,636.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. Cro'rsoHE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Tent, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improvement in tents, relating to that class of tents which when disassembled is convertible into one or more articles of apparel, whereby it may be conveniently transported, making it vof particular value to troops, huntsmen and campers generally.
The object of the invention is to provide a tent which is composed of a number of detachable triangular or sector-shaped sections, each section being adapted to be folded upon itself and secured at the edges to form a poncho.
The invention further resides in certain special features of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which 'similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 illustrates the manner in which one of my improved tent sections is converted into a poncho and worn; Fig. A 2 is a perspective view of the poncho removed from the body; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the tent .sections when eX- tended; Fig. Ll is a view of a Sibley tent constructed of a plurality of detachable sections of the character illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3; and Fig. 5 is a view of a shelter telit constructed of the detachable sections.
A Sibley tent as illustrated in Fig. 4, em bodying my invention, is composed of a plurality of triangular or sector-shaped sections 10, each being detachably connected with the adjacent tent sections at the side edges, and provided at its vertex with a crown ring 11, which is connected with the canvas or other suitable material of which the sections are made, by a number of radiating crown cords 12. These rings are placed over the center pole 13, either before or after the several sections are assembled preparatory to pitching the tent.
For connecting the several sections of the tent together, I preferably employ buttons l and buttonholes, the buttons being secured at the opposite side edges of each section, and as best shown in Fig.` 3 are arranged on the opposite faces of the section at opposite edges, and are provided for substantially one-half of the length of each edge, the remaining length of the edge being devoted to buttonholes. The buttons and buttonholes are also arranged in the reverse order at opposite edges, whereby they are adapted to connect tent sections of like construction, or when the section is folded transversely upon itself, to join together the half portions of the same edge and form a sack-like device, as illustrated in Fig. 2; this device being adapted to be slipped over the body and worn as a poncho. In order to make this possible, I construct each tent section with a transverse slit 14 intermediate its length, through which the head of the wearer may be passed. Adjacent to the edge of the slit 14 is sewed a flap 15, which provides a collar when the tent section is converted into a poncho, and forms a flap for covering the slit and thereby keeping out the rain and windv when forming an element of the tent.
When using the tent section as a poncho, the arms are passed through the connected edges between the buttons, and any device, such as a string, is tied about the waist. The device thus applied gives the wearer free use of his arms and provides a garment fitting with sufficient closeness for comfort and protection from the weather.
At the bottom edges of each of the tent sections, in addition to the usual eyelets or rings for securing the tent to the stakes, are
also provided suitable fastening devices, preferably consisting of buttons and button holes, the buttons being arranged along this edge for substantially one-half its length, and the buttonholes being made in the opposite half. The fastening devices thus located on each tent section, adapts it to be connected at its lower or bottom edge to a like tent section in producing a shelter tent as illustrated in Fig. 5; the particular sheltor tent shown being made up of four sections, two at each side, and supported in the center by an arched member 16.
The pole 13 may be constructed of a number of convenient sized sections, whereby they may be distributed among any number of hunters, campers, etc., together with the ponohos, and the entire tent in this manner carried from one place to another without entailing any inconvenience, but on the contrary providing the hunter with a weatherproof garment.
The particular shape of the tent sections admits of any number within certain limits being placed in a single tent, which is obviously a desirable feature, in that any number of campers each provided with a poncho,
may employ it in the construction of their part of the shelter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A tent composed of a plurality of sections of substantially triangular shape, each section having means at. its opposite side edges serving to detachably connect it to the adjacent tent sections when employed as an element of the tent, or to connect the opposite portions of each edge together when the section is folded transversely upon itself to provide a poncho.
2. A substantially triangular tent section having fastening devices at its opposite edges, the fastening devices at one edge extending for substantially one-half the length thereof and located on one side of the tent section, and the fastening devices at the opposite edge extending at the opposite half thereof and located on the other side of the4 tent section whereby when the said section is folded transversely upon itself the opposite portions of the same edge may be detachably connected by said fastening device.
8. A tent section of substantially triangular shape having means for detachably conc ra poncho of substantially uniform width, the
said means being arranged to leave intervals of the connected edges free for the passage vof the arms of the wearer therebetween to the outside of the poncho.
A tent section of approximately triangular shape adapted to be folded transversely upon itself intermediate its length and provided with means when so folded to detachably connect the two adjacent portions of each side edge of the section on a diagonal line and produce a poncho of substantially uniform width.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
