PAPER RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed August 9, 1906. Serial No. 329,921.
To all whom it may concer/1i:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. BLooMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Paper Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper receptacles and more particularly to that class of receptacles especially designed for carrying oysters and other liquid or semi-liquid substances.
Thc object of the invention is to provide a pail or receptacle the side walls of which are extended above the fold lines at the top of the pail thereby to form a water-tight closure for the pail and eifectually prevent the liquid from slopping over the side walls and escaping at the cover.
A further object is to provide a pail having rectangular side panels the free ends of which are adapted to be folded downwardly on top of the cover when the latter is closed thus reinforcing and strengthening the cover and at the same time preventing leakage of the contents of the ail.
A further object is to provide a supporting bail the terminals of which pierce the opposite sides of the pail and terminate short of the inner walls thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and eiiiciency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an oyster-pail or receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2 and showing the cover in open position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the cover partially closed. Fig. 5 is a lan view of the blank from which the pai or receptacle is formed. Fig. 6 is a perspective view partly in section illustratin a modified form of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved pail or receptacle is prefer'- ably fornied from a paper, blank of the construction shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and consists of a bottomsection 5 having converging side and end walls or sections 6 and 7 connected by corner folds 9 and 10, the side walls 7 being provided with substantially rectangular panels 8, as shown.
The end walls 6 are provided with lateral extensions 11 which form the top or cover of the pail when the blank is folded, said extensions being connected with the adjacent corner-folds 9 and 1() by auxiliary folds 1Q and 13 which together with the extensions l1 constitute the top or cover of the receptacle.
The opposite longitudinal edges of the panels 8 are arranged parallel with each other and the free ends of said panels extended laterally beyond the adjacent end of the blank and inclined or beveled in opposite directions to form side iaps 14 adapted to overlap the corner-folds 13 of the cover thereby to reinforce and strengthen the cover at the point of attachment of the fastening devices 15 and 16.
Attention is here called to the fact that the edges of the corner-folds 10 and panels 8 are extended beyond the fold lines 17 to provide a flap 17", which when the blank is folded to form the vessel and the cover of the latter moved to closed position the panels 8 will project inwardly over the cover, as shown, in Fig. 2 of the drawings thereby forming a water-tight closure and eifectually preventing the liquid from slopping over the side walls and leaking at said cover.
It will also be observed that by reason of the shape of the panels 8 the blank may be conveniently folded without the necessity of severing any portion of the blank or folding extra stock at the corners of the pail which is the case where the side walls are inclined or tapered.
The fastening device 16 consists of a clip one end of. which pierces the adjacent extension 14 and the corner-folds 13 while the oposite end thereof is bent to form a hook .17 adapted to en age the loop of the fastening device 15, the atter being preferably formed of a single length of wire the ends of which are extended through the flap 14 and cornerfolds 13 on the opposite side of the box, as shown.
Itwill thus be seen that the fastening devices serve to retain the flaps 14 and corneror card-board folds 13 in assembled position and also serve to secure the cover in closed position.
As a means for supporting the vessel when transporting the latter from place to place there is provided a suitable handle or bail 18 preferably formed of a single piece of `wire the opposite ends of which are bent to form terminal points 1) which pierce the reinforced side walls of the receptacle and terminate short of the interior walls of the latter thus presenting a smooth uninterrupted surface for contact with the oysters or other contents of the vessel. Y
In assembling the pail the side walls 7 are folded inwardly on the lines 20 and the corner-folds 10 folded on the lines 21 and thence folded laterally on the panels 8 so as to present a receptacle similar to that shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The oysters or other liquid or semi-liquid substance is then introduced into the receptacle and the coverextensions 1l folded downwardly on the lines 22, after which the flaps 14 and folds 12 are folded laterally and downwardly in engagement with the upper surface of thc extensions 11, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings thus preventing the contents of the vessel from slopping over the side walls and escaping at the top or cover of the pail.
If desired the flaps 14 may be glued, pasted or otherwise secured to the folds 13 before the attachment of the fastening devices 15 and 16 and the bail 18 instead of being formed of wire may be constructed from a single length of water-proof material.
It will here be observed that by folding the receptacle in the manner before described the side walls of the latter are reinforced and strengthened at the points of attachment of the supporting bail while at the same time the extensions 14 of the panels serve to assist in locking the cover in closed position.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings there is illustrated a modified form of the invention in which the side walls or panels 8 terminate short of the adjacent ends of the folds or flaps 13 when the blank is folded, the severed portion being indicated by the dot and dash line 23 in the blank shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In this form of the device the free ends of the side walls or anels 8 extend a short distance above the old lines 17 and are secured in any suitable manner to the folds 13 as by staples24, the extended portion 25 of the pail being foldable downwardly into engagement with the adjacent surface of the cover when the latter is closed so as to prevent leakage in the manner before described.
The boxes may be made in different sizes and shapes and formed of aper or other suitable material capable of elng bent into the desired shape. l
From the foregoing description it isi thought that the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood by those skilled in the art and further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
