DISPLAY-CASE To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. KURZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Cases; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, Such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in what is known in the art as all-glass displaycases adapted to be mounted upon a table, counter, standard or other support.

The primary object of this invention is to construct a display-case of the character indicated which has the bottom of its merchandise-receiving compartment bearing the front of the case and slidable forwardly to render any obj ect contained within the case and resting upon the said bottom conveniently accessible.

Another object is to provide a displaycase of the character indicated which has a plurality of merchandise receiving compa-rtinents, a top in common for both of the said compartments and separate sliding bottoms for the compartments.

Another object. is to provide a display-case of the character indicated which is simple and durable in construction.

lVith these objects in View, and to the end of realizing` any other advantages hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a display-case embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. l, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 4l is a side view of the front-bearing sliding bottom of one of the compartments of the case. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5 5, Fig. l, eX- cept that in Fig. 5 the sliding bottom of one of the compartments of the case is shown slid outwardly.

The display-case illustrated in the said drawings has two compartments a and a arranged side by side, and Z) indicates the partition formed between the said compartments, which partition forms the inner side Specification of Letters Patent.

walls of the compartments, and c and c represent the outer side walls of the compartments. The partition and the outer side walls c and o are parallel and each formed by a glass plate. It will be observed therefore that my improved display-case comprises a plurality of laterally spaced glass plates to form the side walls of one or more compartments formed by or within the case. The said plates extend forwardly and rearwardly of the case, extending forwardly from the rear wall or back Z of the said compartments, and the back or rear walls of the compartments are formed preferably by a single glass plate which crosses the rear end of the central plate or partition Z9 and overlaps the rear edges of the outer side plates o. lThe top walls c of both compartments are preferably formed by a single glass plate which rests upon the plates c, c and d.

The rear plate Z rests upon a wooden bar D which rests upon a wooden base J. The bar D is attached to the base J in any approved manner, as, for instance, by screws D1. The bar D extends longitudinally of the plate Z and is arranged at its rear side flush with the rear side of the said plate. The bar D projects far enough forwardly of the plate Z to form a bearing for two wooden Strips f which rest upon the forward portion of and are glued or otherwise attached to the said bar at opposite sides respectively of the partition-forming plate b. The strips somewhat overlap the inner side of the rear plate Z and are arranged therefore to form forward abutments for the said plate.

A wooden strip g is attached to the bar D in any approved manner, as, for instance, by screws g. The strip g is arranged at the rear Side and longitudinally of the bar D and somewhat overlaps the outer side of the rear plate (Z and thereby prevents displacenient ofthe said plate rearwardly. It will be observed therefore that the base J is provided with means (the strips f and g) for preventing forward and rearward displacement of the rear plate CZ. Preferably the strip g overlaps and covers the rear edge of the base J.

Each side plate c rests upon a wooden bar C which rests upon the base J. The said bar C extends longitudinally of the said plate c and is arranged flush at its outer side with the outer side of the said plate. The said bar C is attached to the base J in any approved manner, as, for instance, by screws C, and projects far enough inwardly beyond the inner side of the said plate c to form a support for a wooden strip /L which is glued or otherwise attached to the said bar and extends longitudinally of and prevents inward displacement of the plate. At the outer side of each bar C is a wooden strip 7e' which is arranged longitudinally of the said side of the said bar and somewhat overlaps the outer side of the plate c resting upon the said bar and prevents outward displacement of the said plate. It will be observed therefore that the base J is provided with means for preventing' lateral displacement of the side platos c and C'. Preferably the strips 7e overlap and cover the side edges of the base J and are secured to the bars C by screws 71:.

The central plate or partition b rests upon a wooden bar B which extends longitudinally of the said plate and rests upon the base J. The bar B is attached to the base J in any approved manner, as for instance, by screws B. The bar B projects laterally beyond opposite sides of the central plate to form a bearing for two wooden strips m and a glued or otherwise attached to the said bar and arranged at opposite sides respectively and longitudinally of the said plate. The strips m and a. prevent lateral displacement of the plate in opposite directions respectively. It will be observed therefore that the base J is provided with means for preventing lateral displacement of the central plate or partition Z).

Q represents the forwardly slidable bottom of each compartment, which bottom rests upon the base J and in its inwardly slid and normal position extends at its rear end in under the strip f, which therefore overlaps the said bottom in the said position of the bottom which is also overlapped on top by the strips it, m and a..

The bottom Q of each compartment is provided at its forward end with a wooden bar 7 which extends transversely of the bottom and is suitably secured in place. The bar 7 is provided at its top and forward side with a rabbet 8 engaged by a glass plate 10 which fo'rms the front wall of the said compartment. A wooden strip l2 is arranged at the outer side and extends longitudinally of the bar 7 and somewhat overlaps the 'forward side of the said plate 10 and retains the latter in place within the rabbet 8. The strip l2 is attached to the bar 7 in any approved manner, as for instance, by screws 13. The said strip l2 preferably overlaps and covers the forward edge of the base J in the inwardly slid and normal position of the bottom having the said strip. It will be observed therefore that the front of each compartment of my improved display-case is formed by glass plate which is carried by the sliding bottom of the said compartment. The said 1front is shifted forwardly during the sliding of the bottom outwardly, and merchandise upon the said bottom within the compartment is rendered conveniently accessible by thus sliding the said bottom.

The base J is cut away at its under side and forward end, as at J under each bottom Q to afford access to the rear surface of the lower portion of the strip l2 of the said bottom and accommodates the application of a finger to the said surface for the purpose of' sliding the bottom outwardly.

The front plates 10 overlap the forward edge of opposite side plates c and c respectively, and each front plate 10 also overlaps the forward edge of the central plate or partition Z).

To accommodate the formation of a desirable joint between the strips 12 of the sliding bottoms Q and the strips 7e at the outer sides and forward ends of the side plates c the said strips 7c' extend somewhat forwardly of the said plates and the strips 12 overlap the forward ends of the strips la in the inwardly slid and closed position of the said bottoms.

The display-case hereinbefore described is not only attractive and simple and durable in construction, but the front plate 10 of each compartnient is rendered readily removable for renewal or other purposes by turningV the screws 13 of the saidbottom in the direction required to loosen the said plate within the plate-engaging rabbet 8 of the said bottom.

That I claim is l. A display-case comprising a compartment having two laterally spaced glass plates forming opposite side walls respectively of the compartment, a glass plate forming the front wall of the compartment and loose relative to the other plates, a forwardly slidable bottom bearing the said front plate, bars arranged under and longitudinally of and supporting the laterally spaced plates and provided with means for preventing lateral displacement of the laterally spaced plates, and a base arranged under and supporting the said bars.

A display-case comprising a compartment having two laterally spaced glass plates forming opposite side walls respectively of the compartment, a glass plate forming the -top wall of the compartment, a glass plate forming the front wall of thecompartment and loose relative to the other plates, a forwardly slidable bottomv bearing the said front plate7 bars arranged under and longitudinally of and supporting the laterally spaced plates, strips overlapping the upper surface of the sliding bottom and attached to the said bars and prevent-ing displace- 'ment of the laterally spaced plates toward each other, a base arranged under and supporting the said bars, and strips arranged at the outer side and extending longitudia glass plate forming nally of and attached to the said bars and somewhat overlapping the outer sides of the laterally spaced plates and also overlapping the side edges of the base.

A display-case comprising a compartment having two laterally spaced glass plates forming opposite side walls respectively of the compartment, a glass plate forming the rear wall of the compartment, a glass plate forming the top wall of the compartment, a glass plate forming the front wall of the Compartment and loose relative to the other plates, a forwardly slidable bottom bearing the said front plate; a bar arranged under and extending longitudinally of the rear plate; a strip overlapping the upper surface of the bottom in the inwardly slid position of the bottom and attached to the last-mentioned bar and arranged to form a forward abutment for the rear plate; a base arranged under and supporting the said bar and provided with means for preventing lateral dis placement of the laterally spaced plates, strips arranged at the outer side and e2- tending longitudinally of and attached to the said bar and somewhatoverlapping the outer side of the rear plate.

A display-case comprising two compartments arranged side by side and having a partition between the said compartments; glass plates forming the rear7 top and side walls of the compartments; glass plates forming the front walls of the compartments and loose relative to the other plates; forwardly slidable bottoms t bearing the front plates, and a bar arranged i, under and longitudinally of and supporting the aforesaid partition-forming plate and provided with means for preventing lateral l displacement of the partition-forming plate.

5. A display-case comprising two coml partments arranged side by side and having l a glass plate forming a partition between l the said compartments; glass plates forming the rear; top and side walls'of the compartments; glass plates forming the front walls of the compartments and loose relative to the other plates; forwardly slidable bottoms bearing the front plates; a bar arranged under and longitudinally of and supporting the aforesaid partition-forming plate, and two strips overlapping the upper surfaces of the sliding bottoms and attached to the said bar, which strips are arranged to prevent lateral displacement of the partitionforming plate in opposite directions respectively.
