INVEN Tan 4 JFxeZ fiffizdezvaiz ATTORNEYS THE omzls PETERS ca. \VASHINGTHN, D41:
AXEL WILLIAM ANDERSON, OF SELDOVIA, DISTRICT OF ALASKA.
HARMONICA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1908.
Application filed August 18, 1907. Serial No. 388,475.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL WVILLIAM AN- nnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seldovia, in the District of Alaska, have invented a new and Improved Harmonica, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to teething rings for children and has for its object to provide a harmonica in the form of a teething ring so that when it is used a sound or music will distract the attention of the child, and quiet it when it bites on the ring and in that way cuts its gums with its newly formed teeth.
Another object of the invention is to provide a teething ring which the child will enjoy using, and which will when used exercise the lungs of the child.
Another object of the invention is to provide a harmonica in ring form, so that the players mouth will not cover as many notes as is the case in the usual form of harmonica, while the instrument is not increased in size.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a musical toy which will aiford children much amusement, recreation and instruction.
In this specification I will describe the construction of my invention which is shown in the accompanying drawings but I do not limit myself thereto as I consider myself entitled to all forms and embodiments of the invention which may be held to fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the figures, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view with a portion of the outside rubber ring broken away to show the harmonica in the teething ring; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the invention.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the harmonica is composed of three principal members, the two outside rubber members 1, inclosing the harmonica member 2. These outside rubber members are made of rubber of such a character that a child may bite the harmonica without injuring it or the childs gums in any way, and as shown these outside members are annular in shape with a central opening. The outside rubber members are preferably rounded, so as not to present any corners which may in any way injure the child and also to obtain a good finish for the completed article.
The central harmonica member 2, is annular in shape with a central opening and it registers with the outside rubber members 1, so that the three m mbers may be secured to make a complete and finished whole. The harmonica member is composed of two an nular disks 7, spaced at regular intervals by radially disposed partitions 3, and each of the two annular disks has radial slots A between the said partitions, and secured to each of the said annular disks are reeds 5, which are suspended in each of the said radial slots 4, respectively. Each of the rubber out-side members 1, has radially disposed pockets 6 between the partitions which space the annular disks apart.
The teething ring as described has afancy appearance and it answers all the purposes which the teething rings now on the market serve, but in addition it is attractive to children and when once used it has a fascination which serves many purposes. A child may use it in cutting his teeth and as stated above the music or sound which is made distracts the childs attention and amuses it, and when the child becomes older it does not discard the ring for it then serves as a musical instrument and by using it the child strengthens its lungs and it may also by the use of it and in connection with the music it may hear, cultivate its ear for music.
*Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. As an article of manufacture, a harmonica in the form of a teething ring, and
material on the sides of the harmonica against which a child may bite to assist the growth of the childs teeth through the gums.
2. As an article of manufacture, a harmonica which is adapted to be used as a teething ring consisting of a central annular member, reeds suspended therein, and annular side members attached thereto, the side members being of resilient material.
3. As an article of manufacture, a harmonica which is adapted to be used as a teething ring, consisting of a central annular member composed of two annular disks spaced apart, reeds secured at one end to the said annular disks, and resilient members secured to each side of the central annular member.
4. As an article of manufacture, a harmonica consisting of a central member composed of two annular disks spaced apart at regular intervals by radially disposed partitions, radial slots in the said radial disks between the said partitions, reeds secured to be held in suspension in the said slots, and members secured to each side of the said central member.
5. As an article of manufacture, a harmonica which is adapted to be used as a teething ring consisting of a central member composed of two annular disks spaced apart at regular intervals by radially disposed partitions, radial slots in the said annular disks between the said partitions, reeds secured to be held in suspension in the said slots, and resilient members secured to each side of the central member.
6. As an article of manufacture, a harmonica consisting of a central member com posed of two ring-like bodies spaced apart at regular intervals by radially disposed partitions, radial slots in the said ring-like bodies between the said partitions, reeds secured to be held in suspension in the said slots, and ring-like members secured to each side of the central member, the said ringlike members having pockets respectively between the partitions which space apart the ring-like bodies.
7. As an article of manufacture, a harmonica, consisting of a ring-like body having openings spaced apart in its periphery and reeds disposed within the said body.
8. As an article of manufacture, a harmonica consisting of a ring-like body with openings spaced apart on its periphery, and radially disposed reeds lying in substantially the same plane with the said body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AXEL WILLIAM ANDERSON.
