Description

Y A; H. was.
DOOR SHIELD 0R COVER.
Patented Dec, 8, 1908.
ALBERT H. SITES, O F ASHLAND, OHIO.
BARN-noon SHIELD 0R COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed January 14;, 1908. Serial No. 410,812.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. SITES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Barn- Door Shield or Cover, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in covers or shields for protecting sliding barn doors.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of shields or covers for protecting sliding barn doors, and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive shield or cover of great strength and durability, adapted to be readily applied to a sliding barn door, or similar closure, and capable of covering the open space between the upper edge of the door and the side of the barn and of protecting the track and the rollers or wheels from the weather.
A further obj eot of the invention is to provide a cover or shield of this character having supporting angles, adapted to form lap joints for enabling a shield or cover of any number of separate sections to be employed.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully explained, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shield or cover, and constructed in accordance with this invention, and shown applied to a portion of a barn. Fig. 2 is an enlarged rear elevation of a portion of a shield or cover. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal sectional view, illustrating the construction of the lap joint.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
].1 designate similar constructions of a barn door shield or cover, constructed of galvanized sheet metal, or other suitable material and composed of an upper inner vertical portion or flange 2, a lower outer vertical flange or portion 3, and an intermediate connecting portion 4, arranged at an inclination and extending downwardly and outwardly from the bottom of the upper vertical portion or flange 2.
The upper vertical portion or flange 2 is fitted against the wall 5 of a barn at a point above the sliding door 6, and the shield extends over the track 7 and the door hangers 8 and protects the same from the weather. The lower edge of the lower vertical portion or flange 3 is folded or bent upwardly against its inner face to provide a stiffened lower edge 9.
The shield or cover is supported at intervals by hangers 10, consisting of metallic straps and composed of upper and lower vertical portions 11 and 12 and intermediate connecting portions 13, arranged at an inclination to conform to the configuration of the intermediate connecting portion 4 of the shield or cover. The hangers are arranged on and fit the exterior of the shield or cover, and they are provided at their lower ends with inwardly and u wardly extending supporting hooks 14, w ich receive the lower stiffened edge 9. V
The hangers are secured to the intermediate portion of the shield or cover by bolts or rivets 15, and they are mounted on the side or wall of the barn by screws or nails 16. The hanger occurring at the adjacent ends of two sections is also secured to the lower vertical portion of one of the sections by a bolt or rivet 17, and it rojects beyond such section and overlaps t e contiguous outer section, which fits within and is supported by the overlapping end or joint hanger. By this construction the shield or cover may be made any desired length by increasing the number of sections, and Weather tight joints are provided without overlapping the adjacent ends of the sections.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An extensible barn door shield or cover including a plurality of sections having abutting ends, a hanger overlapping the abutting ends of the said sections and arranged on the outside of the same and conforming to configuration thereof and constituting the sole supporting means for holding the sections in position, said hanger being provided at its lower end With an inwardly extending up- In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as turned support receiving the lower edges of my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature the said sections, and fastening means for in the presenceof two Witnesses.
securing the hanger to the end of one of the ALBERT H. SITES. 5 said sections, the contiguous end of the 'Witnesses:
other section being detachably fitted in and JAY R. MARGUERAT,
. interlocked with the hanger. A. P. STALTER.
