CESTERN CUT-OFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.

To all' whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM FINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkston, in the county of Hutchinson and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Cistern Cut-Os, of which the following 1s a specication, referreaches a predetermined height.
rlhe object of the invention is to provide a cistern cut off which will be simple, strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and reliable and efficient in operation.

My improved cistern cut off comprises a body 1 having an inlet pipe 2 at its upper end, an outlet pipe 3 at its lower end and an outlet 4 upon one side, the latter being ada ted to discharge into the cistern. rhe out et 4 is in the form of a circular opening over which is arranged a three sided delector or hood 5, the openportion of'which is covered by wire netting 6 or any other screening material that will prevent solid matter from passing into the cistern. The waste pipe 3 is arranged beneath a circular opening 7 in the bottom of the body 1 and said opening, which forms a valve seat, is adapted to be closed by a hinged or iiat valve 8 mounted upon the bottom of the body 1. Said valve consists of a metal late of substantially circular form which is hinged or pivoted, as at 9, and has its lower face covered with leather or the like 10 which, when the valve is closed, will eectively prevent water from passing through the outlet 7. The cistern outlet opening 4 is also so disposed that when said valve is raised to expose the outlet opening 7 it will close the opening 4, as will be readily seen upon reference to Fig. 2.
The valve is operated by a link 11 pivoted at its upper end to the bottom face of the valve and extending through the opening 7 and the pipe 3 and having its lower end pivoted to an arm 12 on a rock shaft 13 journaled in bearing brackets 14 depending from the bottom of the pipe 3. Upon one end of the rock shaft or pivot 13 is a crank arm 15 to which is pivotally connected the stem of a loat 16. rihe float 16 which is arranged within the cistern, may be of any suitable form and construction, but l pret'- erably make its stem adjustable and of two slidabl-y engaged sections 17, 18 one of which is shown tubular to telescopically receive the other, which latter is held in an adjusted position within it by a set screw' or any other suitable means 19.
ln operation, it will be seen that the weight of the float will hold the valve 8 in its closed position over the seat or opening 7 and that when the water in the cistern rises to a predetermined point and moves the float upwardly it will swing the valve to its open position to open the outlet opening 7 Aand ipe 3 and to close the outlet opening 4.
y adjusting the stem of the float it will be seen that the valve may be operated to shut oii the water when the latter is at any desired height or level in the cistern.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a body having an inlet and two outlet openings, one being disposed in its bottom and the other in its side, a valve hinged at one edge in the body at the point of intersection ot its bottom and said side whereby said valve may be swung to a horizontal position to close the opening in the bottom of the body or to a vertical osition to close the opening in the side of tliie same, bearings beneath the body, a shaft in said bearings and having two arms, a link connecting one arm of the shaft to the bottom of said valve, and a float connected to the other arm of said shaft.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body having an inlet and two outlet openings, one being disposed in its bottom and the other in its side, a valve hinged at one edge in the body at the point of intersection of its bottom and said side whereby said valve may be swung to a horizontal position to close the opening in the bottom ofthe body or to a vertical position to close the opening in the side of the same, bearings beneath the body, a shaft in said bearings and having tWo arms, a link connecting one arIn of the shaft to the bottom of said valve, a float, and a stein for the float connected to the other arm on the shaft and consisting of slidably engaged and adjustably connected sections.
3. A device of the character described comprising a body having an inlet and two outlet openings, one of the latter being disposed in its bottom and the other in its side, a hinged valve adapted to alternately open and close said outlet openings, a deflecting hood arranged over the outlet opening in the side of the body, a screen in said hood, a pipe depending from the body, bearings carried by said pipe, a shaft in said bearings, an arm upon said shaft, a link connecting said arrn to the valve and extending through said pi' e and the outlet opening in the bottom of tiie body, a second arm on said shaft, a fioat, and astern connecting said ioat to said second arm.
