CLOTHES-LINE HOLDER.
To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that I, GODFRIED LAURE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Santa Monica, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a clothes line holder, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide positive and reliable means for supporting a plurality of clothes lines in an elevated position, second, to obviate the necessity of using clothes props, third, to provide a clothes holder that can be adjusted to position the clothes lines at any inclination, whereby air or wind can freely circulate among the clothes to be dried, and fourth, to provide a simple and durable clothes line holder that will occupy a comparatively small space and supply a large washing.
The above objects are attained by a structure that will be presently described in detail and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clothes line hozlder, Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the line supports in a tilted position, Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating one of the line supports lowered to permit of clothes being placed on the lines thereof, Fig. 4 is an elevation of one end of the clothes line holder, Fig. 5 is a similar view of the opposite end, Fig. 6 is a plan of the holder, Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of one of the supporting posts, and Fig. 8 is a similar view of a portion of another supporting post.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 designate posts erected in the ground and braced by angularly disposed posts 3 preventing the posts from shifting due to a weight suspended between said posts. The upper end of the post 1 is provided with an opening 4 and journaled in said opening by a pin 5 is a sheave 6.
Secured to the sides of the post 1 are brackets 7 supporting a revoluble reel 8 having a crank 9 for rotating said reel, said crank being limited in its movement by a pin 10 detachably mounted in the post 1. Secured to the reel and adapted to wind Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December 10, 1908.
Patented April 6, 1909.
Serial No. 466,902.
thereon is a cable 11, said cable extending over the sheave 6 and having branches 12 suitably connected to the ends of a line support 13.
Connected to the end of the support 13 is a cable 14 having a plurality of equally placed knots or enlargements 15. The cable 14 is adapted to engage under a `nook 16 carried by the rear side of the post 1, and said cable is moved to tilt the support 13 at any desired inclination, said support being retained in an adjusted position through the medium ol" the knots or enlargements 15 engaging the hooks 16.
Pivotally mounted at the upper end of the post 2 by a pin 17 is a support18, said support having an oblong opening 19 providing clearance for the post 2 when said support is tilted. rIhe confronting faces of the supports 13 and 18 are provided with hooks 2O and connecting said hooks are clothes lines 21, these lines being preferably arranged in two groups, whereby the clothes placed upon the lines will tend to equally balance the supports 13 and 18.
Connected to the end of the support 18 is a knotted cable 22 adapted to engage a hook 23 carried by the rear side of the post 2. The hooks 23 and 16 are detachably mounted in the posts 1 and 2 in order that the hooks can be shifted to openings 24 provided therefor in the posts should the knotted cables 22 stretch or sag.
To place clothes upon the lines 21, the support 13 is lowered and the support 18 tilted, whereby clothes can first be placed on one side of the holder and then the support 18 tilted to permit of clothes being placed on the opposite side. The reel 8 is then used to elevate the support 13 and draw the lines 21 taut. If it is then desired to tilt the supports 13 and 18, the knotted cables 14 and 22 are used.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A clothes line holder comprising posts, a sheave carried by one of said posts, a reel carried by said post, a cable wound upon said reel and adapted to pass upwardly over said sheave, a support attached to said cable, a support pivotally mounted upon the other of said posts, clothes lines connecting said supports, and knotted cables attached to the ends of said supports and supports and to seid posts for tilting seid adapted to be adjustably connected to said supports. Y 1G posts for tilting said supports. ln testrnonT whereof ex my signature 2. A clothes line holder comprising posts, in the presence of two Witnesses.
