4T1: all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, R. B. PRINDLE, of Norwich, in the county of Chenango, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixtures; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making apart of this specification, iu which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, showing my improved xture as applied to a roller;

Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same on the line x :c of fig. 1; and

Figures 3 and 4 are side elevations of the bracket and lever respectively.

Letters of like name and kindrefer to like parts in eachl of the figures.

The nature of my invention consists in pivoting one end of the-curtaiu-roll within a slot having au upward and a forward curve, so that when said roll is moved outward, it shall be raised, and release a ratchet-wheel, secured to said roller, from engagement with a pin or other detent secured to the bracket, and, when liberated, saidroller sliall drop backward' and downward, -santo:uatically, so as to bring said ratchet-wheel'iuto engagement again with said pin or detent.

t also consists in the employment of a lever pivoted to the bracket above and in rear of the roller, and provided with a vertical slot, through which `the pivot of said roller passes, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.`

One end of said vroller is pivoted within a bracket,

. in the usual manner, while the opposite end is provided withl a metallic spool, C, the ilanges of which are formed byv a cap, c, covering the end of the roller, and

by aratchet-wheel, D.

A pivot, E, projects outward from the centre of the ratchet-wheel, and furnishes an axial bearing for the roller.'

F represents a bracket, having a slot, f, corresponding in widthto the diameter of the pivot E, which curves upward land forward, as seen in iig. 3. When the roller is in place, with the pivot resting in the bottom of the slot, the teeth of the ratchet-wheel engage with a piu or detent, x', secured to and projecting at a right angle therewith from the inner face of said bracket, so as to prevent the roller from turning; but

if the roller be moved outward,'the pivot will slide upward in the slot, and release said ratchet-wheel Vfrom engagement with the detent, and permit theroller to revolve freely.

To accomplish the latter result, a lever, G, of the shape shown in fig. 4, is pivoted at its upper corner to the bracket, above and in rear of the pivot E, which pivot passes through a vertical slot, g, Within said lever.

The lower end of the lever is bent inward at a right angle to its face, and is provided with -an opening for the passage of the cord H from the spool.

It' now the cord be brought forward, by the haud,it

will produce a like movement of the lever audroller, and release the ratchet-wheel from engagement with the detent, so as to permit saidroller to be revolved by saidcorfhand thecnrtilin raised or lowered, as may` be desired.

. Upon releasing the cord, the lever and roller drop downward and backward, so as to bring the ratchetwheel into engagement with the detent again, and at once arrest the motion of the roller.

Itis believed that this device is the most simple, durable, and convenient of any that has ever been used for'a like purpose, and that, as `it can be furnished at a small cost, when once known, its general adoption will be certain.

Having thus fully sct forth the nature and merits of my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The within-described curtain-fixture, consisting of the spool C, ratchet-wheel D, or its equivalent, pivot E, bracket F, provided with the curved slot f, and deteut x', and the lever G, provided with the slot g, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein 'shown and described.

Also, the bracket F, provided with the curved slot f, in combination wit-h the lever G, containing the vertical;- slot g, and pivoted above said slot, substantially as herein shown and specified.
