Be it known that l. JOHN L. DAnL UIsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and. useful Improvement in Jar-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to improvements in jar holders and has for its primary object a device of its kind for holding the body of a jar which is simple in construction, etlective in operation, inexpensive to manufacture and not likely to get out of order after continuous and severe use.
To these ends my invention comprises in a general way a pair of pivoted jaws carrying upon their power ends, a pair of strips which a e separably connected by the particular formation thereof.

As shown they are constructed by stamping and pressing the parts out of sheet metal. They may, however, be cast or otherwise formed in the usual manner. Secured upon the pivots 3 and 4 is a pair of thin metal strips 7 and 8 which are secured together by means of a separable joint 0 forming a body clasping loop D. This loop may be made of varying size by means of the rigid joints 0 which. are produced in the following manner: The outer end of the strip 7 is formed with a pair of interned shoulders 9 between which narrow shanks 10 on the body portion of the strip 8 may be passed into sliding connection therewith. Spaced longitudinally upon the strip 8 with the intervening shanks 10 are pairs of lateral arms 11 which are adapted. to impinge against the shoulders 9 when the loop is contracted by closing the jaws. Immediately adjoining each pair of lateral arms is a portion 12 of a shank 10 which is Specification of Letters Patent.

wider than the shank and which is adapted. to be drawn within the shoulders 9 to prevent the strip 8 from becoming detached from the strip 7 except by sliding the strips back upon each other and withdrawing a shank from within the corresponding pair of shoulders. The manner of securing the innor ends of the strips 7 and 8 to the pivots 3 and 4 consists of looping the ends of the strips around said pivots and securing their ends to the body portions of the strips by means of rivets 13. The wide portions 12 of the strip 8 are connected with the shanks 10 by slanting shoulders 14 which tend to guide said wide portions between the shoulders 9 when the strips are interlocked.
Other means may be employed for interlocking the strips together, such as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. In this construction the interned shoulders 9 have recesses 15 into which the arms ll are adapt ed to pass and thus prevent the strips from being separated except by sliding them back on each other. When using a construction in which the shoulders 9 are recessed, the shanks 10 upon the strip 8 need not be pro vided with wide portions 12 or slanting shoulders 14.
In use the clasp loop D is made of the desired size to encircle the body of the by joining the strips 7 and 8 together. The long arms 5 and 6 or handles of the jaws are then pressed toward each other causin the loop to contract tightly around the body of the jar. By holding the handles tight the jar can be carried or held for the purpose of securing a cap thereon or when it is heated or it is not desirable to hold the jar directly in the hands.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and. desire to protect by the Letters Patent is:
1. Ajarholder, com rising,apairofpivoted lever jaws and a pair 0 strips pivotally secured to the work ends of said jaws and adapted to be fastened together to produce a body clasping loop of the desired size by means of separable connections formed by a pair of inturned shoulders on one member and pairs of lateral arms joined by intermediate narrow longitudinal shanks upon the other member; whereby said strips can be separated and any pair of arms passed into engagement with said shoulders to produce a loop of the required size.
2. A jar holder, comprising, a pair of pivoted lever aws and a pair of strips pivotally secured to the work ends of said jaws and adapted to be fastened together to produce a body clasping loop of the desired size by means of separable connections formed by a pair of inturned shoulders on one member and pairs of lateral arms joined by intermediate narrow longitudinal shanks upon the other member, said members having means for holding the strips together to prevent separation when they are joined by said separable connections; whereby said strips can be separated by sliding them back upon each other and any pair of arms passed 1nto engagement with said shoulders to produce a loop of the required size.
3. A jar holder, comprising a pair of pivoted lever jaws and a pair of strips pivotally secured to the work ends of said jaws and adapted to be fastened together to produce a body olasping loop of the'desired size by means of separable connections formed by a pair of inturned shoulders on one member and pairs of lateral arms joined by intermediate narrow longitudinal shanks having enlarged portions adjoining said arms; whereby said strips can be separated by sliding them back upon each other, any pair of arms passed into engagement with said shoulders and said strips prevented from detachment by said enlarged portions of the shanks, for the purposes specified.
