KRAFT BOOTH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GILLINDER AND SONS,
- INC., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
REFLECTOR ron ARTIFICIAL LIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1909 Application filed November 13, 1908. Serial No. 462,409:
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, KRAFT Room, a citizen of, the United States, residing at Philafleeting prisms and an integral delphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Reflec= tors for Artificial Light; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an im rovement in artificial light reflectors of the class known as prismatic reflectors which are particularly adapted for usewith incandescent electric or gasli hts.
The 0 ject of my invention is to rovide reflectors of this class with an integra shade,
whereby there is roduced .in effect a combined reflector and shade. -It consists, generally s eaking,,of an u per orbody portion coverer. externally wit integral light reower portion depending from said body, and, ground, frosted or otherwise surfaced to shade the The invention'will first be described in the following specification by means of the accompanying drawings and afterward pointed out inthe 'claim at the conclusion of said specification.
- In said drawings, Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of one form of my combined reflector and shade. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation o1 another'form of combined reflector and shade.
The combined reflector and shade is made of clear or transparent glass pressed in suitable molds. The upper or body portion A may be of any of the numerous shapesand designs in WlllCllFIlSlIlittlC electric reflectors are now made. he one illustrated in Fig. l of the drawingsis in the form of'a conic frustu'm, but obviously the sides instead of being straight may be curved, flared, scalloped or formed in. any desired shape, as indicated in Fig. 2, the shape forming no art of my present invention. The general shape of the body, whether straight or curved sided, mavtherefore be said to be approximately conical. It is formed with the usual annular neck B, at its inner end by means of which it may be attached to a lamp, and increases in diameter toward its outer edge or mouthC; Exteriorly the reflector is surfaced with integral prisms D preferably extending from a point slow the neck B tothe edge or mouth C,
these prisms being formed either by molding or pressing-or by cutting after'the reflectorshade has been molded or pressed. A large percentage of the light rays emanatin from the'lam to which t e reflector is app icd, is reflects by these prisms D from the mouth of the reflector, while some of the light rays pass through the sides of the reflector.
Depending from the mouth of the body is an integral shade E, the cross section of 'which'corres onds with the cross section of if desired, the shade may also be given a fancy form, as indicated in Fig. 2.
In my. combined prismaticreflectdrand' shade, the light is reflected from the-mouth O and also through the sides of the body A in a manner common with prismatic electric reflectors. I Immediately below the mouth of the bod however, the light is shaded by the shade l ,and the eyes thereby protected from the rays' emanating from .thispoint.
By increasing or decreasing the Width of the r shade E the amount of prot'ection from the light is increased in. decreased accordingly.
I claim/as my 'mventidn An artificial light reflector and shade of pressed glasscomprising an approximatelyconical, transparent body formed with integral reflecting prisms on \its external sur- =face, and an Integral, a proximately cylindrical,- o aqu'e "shade mouth o said body.
In testimony whereof in presence of two witnesses.
KRAFT noorn,
V epending from the Witnessesn HowAnn S. BEA'r'rY, F. R.GILL1NDER.
