P. J. MADDEN. v PLUMBING FIXTURE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 24,1906. RENEWED JUNE 5, 1909.

- PLUMING-FIZTUEE.
specification of Letters Lateut. inemen and ma at, 1906, Serial No. mans. Renewed Fans Patented {5, 1W9. Serial Ito. scars-3.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, Farmer; J. MADDEN, i a citizen of the United States, residing at county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and l useful Improvements in Plumbing-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification;
The term fixtures as used in this speci- I closets, urinals, sinks, bath tubs, wash basins, plumbing devices in the nature i of receptacles with which it is necessaryito I make a. pipe connection for either supplying or evacuating the receptacle. ,4 In its broadest aspect the invention coversand includes either an inlet or an outlet pipe, and in a more limited aspect it includes a cooperative relation of both, with respect to the bowl.
For the sake of brevity, the term bowl will hereinafter be used to denote the receptacle of the fixture, but with the understanding that any otherspeeific name for a receptacle of any particular type or character may be read for it.
he invention is particularly well adapted to that classof fixtures in which the bowl has to be removed from time to time for the purpose of removing obstructions or for repair purposes, and with fixtures of this class, especially those in which the bowl must be removed and put in lace from in front (2'. e., without going ack of the wall or slab through which the pipe connection or connections extend), facility of removal and replacemeiit is, of course, important. As before intimated, the invention is applicable to all classes of plumbing fixtures, but my original aim was to provide an improved urinal, and since it is to this class of xturesthat the invention is particularly adapted, I have selected such'a fixture for illustrating the invent-ion and will hereinafter particularly describe this embodiment of it,.with theunderstanding, however, that excepting as to those features which are pe culiar to this class of fixtures the invention includes fixtures of all classes to which it is applicable. p
he invention consists in the features of which are made ,a
part of'this specification and in which:
Figurel is a vertical section of a urinal an outlet opening A". The bowl shown in the drawings has'a vertical back adapted to fit against a wall or slab B, thatside or the wall upon which the bowl is located being herein referred to as the front side.- The wall. has through it two openings B and B, 4
through the iormer of which extends an inlet or supplying pipe C- and through the latter of which extends an outletor dis charge pipel). The outlet pipe D proton ably fits the opening B snugly sothat it is incapable oi any vertical movement, while, for reasons that will appear hereinafter clearance is provided between the inlet pipe C and slab B in order to permit limited vertical movement of the inlet pipe in the openin" B, and it being understood that the in st pipe is movable vertically to a limited extent? This vertical movement may be provided for by makingthe pipe itself or suffi cient length to give it the necessary flexibility or by connecting it with a flexible section made of lead. I This, however, is a detail which maybe left to the discretion of the plumber. The drawings show the several parts of the fixture in their final or ultimate positions, and for the time being the following destription will be confined to these relations, a description of the manner of assembling them being given later on.
The bowl has in its rear side, a recess or cavity a the top of which slc es down-wand and rearward so as to provi e an inclined shoulder of and lhis shoulder rests upon a correspondingly inclined lateral arm of a bracket E whlch is secured to the wall B by any suitable means. may be suihcient to support the weight of the bowl, and by reason of the inclination of its lateral arm and the corresponding inclina'tion of theshouldcr a resting upon said arm it will prevent the horizonta movement of the bowl away from the wall 8, un-
less such horizontal movementbe accorm.
panied by a, suiiicient'vertical inoveni ent to clear the shoulder a from the arm of. the bracket." The verticalmovement of the bowl is, however, prevented byaneans now to be described.
The outlet pipe D has its in-t'ake end defiected downward and upward so as to form This bracket, in itself,-
l 1 1.5 a (trout what is known in the art as a P-trap, the intake end of which is presented upward and enters the outlet A with a snug fit, so as to form a slip-joint therewith. The outlet A has a countersink A so that a groove or channel is left between the bowl and the pipe and this groove is occupied by the upper side I of an elastic packing ring or gasket F, the
.lower side of which occupies a groove in a 1 wall or slab 'B. With this arrangement it ring I carried by a yoke 'I, the ring and yoke together constituting a follower. The ring I surrounds the straight vertical portion of the pipeso as to be capable of sliding will be seen that by driving the screw home it will react in one directionagainst the bracket E and in the other direction against the yoke I and these in turn will tend to force the ring .L toward the bowl and there by compress the gasket F and form a tight joint between the bowl and the end of the pipe. W.hen the parts are brought to their proper ultimate positions, as shown in the drawing, the shoulder a will be firmly seated upon the bracket E, whereby downward movement of the bowl is prevented and the horizontal portion of the pipe D will be in contact with the wall B at the top side of the opening B thereby preventingany upwardinovement of the pipe. By reason of the frictional contact ofthe gasket F with the/pipe the downward movement of the bowl is prevented.
The means for connecting the inlet pipe C to the bowl are similar to-those just described for connecting the outlet pipe, and similar features of both are represented by similar letters of reference, but for the sakeof distinction small letters are used for the i with; the bowl, a follower engaging the gasket, e' screw engaging the follower,"and a parts necessary to the inlet pipe.
In order to place the bowl against the wall, it is necessary tolift it high enough to clear the upper extremity of thepipe D. At
the same time it is equally necessary that it :clear the lower extremity of the inlet pipe C, This being so the normal position of the inlet pipe, must, during the operation "of setting the bowl, be somewhat above its normal position when the parts are in their ultimate positions and to this end the opening B is niade large enough to provide clearance above the inlet pipe. The bowl having been put in place and brought to bear upon the bracket E, the screws G and g are driven home, the vertical depending end of the. i pipe having first been inserted in thesewer opening A, and the followerrings I and 1' e lowers.
I do not broadly claim in this application:
A plumbing-fixture havingin combination,
a bowl having vertical inlet and outlet openings, horizontal inlet and'outlet pipes having their ends bent and presented downwardly and upwardly respectively and registering with said openings, and meansfor forming aliquid tight joint between the bowl and pipe northe means for forming a tight joint between the pipe or pipes and the'bowl; nor the means for supporting the bowl, eith r through the medium of the pipe or pipes or the wall bracket, or all of them; nor the support located opposite the opening in the bowl for supporting the pressure ,device by which the tight joint is made: All of these:- thiiigs being claimed in my copending appli cation of even date herewith bearing Serial.
