STEP OR PLATFORM ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Sept. *7, 1909.
Application filed February 3, 1909. Serial No. 475,831.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNIE L. WVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brunswick, in the county of Glynn and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steps or Platform Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings.
This invention is a step or platform for use in connection with water-closets, bathtubs and the like to enable children to use the same without the assistance of grown persons.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which may be readily fastened to a wall, the waste pipe of a closet or bath tub, or to any other support, and which when not in use, may be folded under the closet or tub so as not to be in the way.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the invention showing it applied; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the step or platform attachment; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device showing its parts folded.
In the drawings 1 denotes a step or platform provided with foldable supporting legs 2 and hingedly mounted upon an attaching member 3 which may be fastened to any suitable support. As illustrated, said member 3 is in the form of a bracket arm adapted to be secured to a wall W adjacent to the water-closet C in connection with which the invention is especially adapted for use; although, it will be understood, that it may be used in other ways and for other purposes. The attaching member or bracket arm 8 has at its inner end a cross head 4 the ends of which are formed with openings 5 to receive screws or other fastenings. At the outer end of the member or arm 3 is secured a strap hinge 6 which fastens the step so that it can be folded downwardly under the closet, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The step or platform 1 may be of any desired size, shape and construction, but as illustrated, it is composed of a rectangular board and is supported, when swung to a horizontal position, by the four legs 2. These legs are connected by strap hinges 7 to the bottom of the step 1, the hinges being disposed out of alinement with each other so that the legs may fold under the step, as shown in Fig. 3. By hinging the legs and also the memberor arm 3 as shown, the device may be compactly folded to occupy but little space so that it can be readily stored away or shipped at small expense.
The use of the invention will be understood upon reference to Fig. 1 and it will be seen that when the step or platform 1 is in a horizontal position, shown in full lines in said figure, the legs 2 will support it so that a child may easily step upon it to reach the closet, tub or other object in connection with which the device is used. When the step is not in use its legs may be folded under it, and it may then be folded down under the closet or tub so as not to be in the way.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
The hereindescribed step attachment comprising a T-shaped bracket arm having its cross portion apertured to receive fastenings for attaching it to a support, the third branch of said bracket arm being horizontally disposed, a step hinged to the outer end of said third branch of the bracket arm to swing from a horizontal position downwardly to a vertical position and to'be supported by the bracket arm when in a vertical position and two pairs of supporting legs hinged to the bottom face of said step adjacent its opposite edges, the legs of one pair being arranged out of alinement with the legs ofthe other pair and being foldable in the same direction and in a direction opposite to the folding movement of the other pair, whereby said legs will support the step whenin a horizontal position and will be disposed vertically and against the same when in a. ver tical position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ANNIE L. WILSON.
