As well known by those familiar with sewing machines usirtg waxed thread, it is essential that the thread be maintained at a suft'cicntlyhigh temperature, whether a shuttle or ncedh v thread, that. the requisite pliability be secured for prope action. lleretofore, in winding bobbins with waxed thread l'or use in such machines, a number or bobbins have been wound and when wanted for use have been properly heated by baking or otherwise, a system both objectionable and expensive, because it requires a large number of bobbins, and when heated after being wound there is lack of uniformity in the oit'tusion of heat. In the present invention, therctore, the winding devices are preterably supported by a bracket or frame A scoured to or forming part of a wax thread sewing machine, so that the attendant operating the sewing machine may'wind his own bobbins as needed, and since he uses only one bobbin at a time, only two bobbins are required tor any one machine.

In a bobbin winding machine, the combination of bobbin driving means comprising clutch members, a bobbin driving shat't movable longitudinally and carrying a stophead, a stop-finger and controlling arm operatively connected, a cam actuated by said controlling arm to contact with the stophead and move the bobbin driving shaft longitudinally, and means also actuated by the controlling arm for contacting with the stophead to stop rotation of the bobbin.

In a winding machine for winding *axed thread upon a bobbin, a bracket or frame having a bearing therein, bobbin winding means supported by said bearin means for heating said bearing and the bobbin winding means during the winding operation to secure a uniform temperature throughout the wound mass, and means, comprising a stop finger normally out of contact with the thread wound upon the bobbin, to stop the winding operation when the bobbin has become filled.

In a machine for winding sewing machine bobbins, the combination of bobbin driving means, a. stop-shaft, a controlling arm secured to said shaft, means under control of said arm for stopping the winding operation, an actuator for said controlling arm, means for locking the actuator and controlling arm in bobbin winding posit-ion, a stop'tinger forgiving initial movement to the controlling arm and tripping the locking means when the bobbin has been. wound, and means to then move the actuator and through it continue the movement of the controlling arm in the same direction to stop the winding operation.

16. In a winding machine forwinding thread, the combination of means upon which the thread is wound, driving means for said winding machine, and means for transmitting heat primarily thnoughthe means upon which the thread is wouri -to the center of the thread mass.
17. In a winding machine for winding thread, the combination of driving means for said winding machine, a stop fiiiger normally out of contact with the thread as it is Wound and movable into and out of normal position for contacting with the wound thread when the desired amount as been wound, and means operative by movement of the stop finger toward the center of winding to start the'driving means and operative by movement of the stop finger m the,oppo site direction to stop the driving means.
