To all whom it may concern: b

Be it known'that I, Gnonen BEATTY, of Cleve? land, in the county ot' Guyahoga, and State of Ohio,

have invented certain newl and useful Improvements in rlloc-Plates for Boots and Shoes;4 and I do lnrebyA declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the'salne, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, are plan andside-sectional views of my tip, or guard, in which-are shown the same, constructed with both thev straight and curved face or edge.'

Figure 5 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view ,of a shoe with my tip, or guard inserted.

The nature of my invention consists in so construct# ing a toe-plate tip, or gnard, that when inserted be- 'inner Vand outer soles of the boot or shoe, its outer edge is flush witlrthe upper sole, and the forward portionjof its lower. surface is ona line, or Hush with the sole oftlie boot.

To accomplish this, 1 cast or otherwise form thejip, orguard, so Vthato'is upper surface isa level plate, and

thelfouter edgeof its 'under suriiwe is providedwith a rectangular projection, orshoulder.

The flanged portionV of the tip,entering between' the soles,l`tends greatly to strengthen the same, and.

at the same time aords the means whereby the tip can readily and permanently be attached to the boot. v

Thethick portion of the tip is provided with short spikes, or projecting pin's, which, on entering and be coming embedded in the inner. sole, securelyfastens Y `the same in position.

The flanged portion of the, plate may also be pro! I vided with openings, by means of which, should additionals'ecurity be desired, the tip maybe also screwed to the boot'. l l

'It is well known, that almost invariably the toejis the first portion ot' theV boot orv shoe that begins to wear, and .especially isfthis the case with the shoes of" children and laborers. f

To afford an additional protection to this portion'of the boot or shoe, and that, at the Sametime, is coinparatively unobjeutionable, is the object ofmy present i invent-ion..

Many attempts have been. essayed toaccomplish the 'resultsfaimed at in my invention'. Metallic tips,

in the shape of shields or fenders, of everyvariety of form, have repeatedly-,been tried, but all have been.

found objectionable, and to such an extent is this the fact, that you scarcely ever see one in use, or, indeed,-

Another defectinet with in all thewshelds or 'fenf dersnow before the public, is found inthe fact that they only protect the toe of the upper and the toe of the inner sole, leavingl the toe' of the outer sole `entirely nnprotected. New, :the toe of 'the outer sole is exactly where the wear begins, and which, if you can prevent, there yis no danger of the toe of the upper and inner soles wearing out before the remainder of the boot. Y

This protection .my guard affords, as the. outer sole is cnt away at the forward portion. and restsagainst the inner surface of theshoulder, the-face of 'thetin alone remaining incontact with thefgpnnd or floor.

To 'enable' others skilled' inthe 'art turake and use' my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A is theme-plate, tip, orV guard, and may be made of cast or malleable iron, brass, or any other suitable material. It may be cast in a mould, struck up, or formed in the-desired shape by any of the numerous processes now in use.

TheI plate A may be formed witha straight edge, as shownin iig. 1, or curved, as Ashown in fig'. 4.

The vouter edge of the guard A is formed with a rectangulanprojection, orshoulder, B.
