UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE WILLIAM W. BATGHELDER, OF' BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR. LIGHTING GAS BY ELECTRICITY.
VSpecification' forming part of Letters Patent No'. 94,545., dated September 7, 1869. I
made a new and'useful invention having ref- Y erence to the Inammation of Gas by Electricity; andll do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification,
and represented in the accompanying draw-` ingsgof which--A l y Figure 1 is a front elevation,Fig. 2 a side View, and Fig. 3 a vertical section, ofv my new gas-lighting apparatus. y
In the form in which it is represented in the drawings the apparatus is for the purpose of lighting a cigar. Its main features, however, may be applied for illuminating or various In the drawings, A denotes a conic frustum, composed of vulcanized india-rubber or vulcagite, or other equivalent material capable of generating electricity by the fric'tion of silk Vor cloth when rubbed on its surface.
1t is mounted on a metallic stand, B,and provided with a metallic bell or cap, O, lined with silk4 or other .proper exciting material. The said bell or cap C is connected with the hollow stem D of a gas-cock, X, by means of an insulator or column of vulcanite, E. The stem D turns freely within a metallic knob, Fnounted on the top of the insulator E. .1 'u
A block, G, provided with two prongs, a lextended from it in manner' as represented,
turns freely on the stem, and with the stem constitutes a gascock.
From one side of the block a gas-burner,- H, extends, and fromI the opposite side of4 the block a lever or weighted arm, I, is projected.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the lever, the block, andLthe gas-burner, the section exhibiting a. hole, b, made laterally out of the tubular stem l).
A conduit or tube, K,"projects from and.
v opens into the stem between the two prongs aa.
It is intended that a iiexible or india-rubber tube or hose for the conveyance of gas into the stopcock shall be applied to and sogas to open knob, c, is afxed, an insulator, N, of vlllcanite,'being `fixed to the opposite sideof the burner.
Another-such wire or arm, O, is extended through the insulator, and-terminates at its i upper end-in a=knob,d, the two knobs being arranged at a short distance apart, and so that a stream of fgas, on making its exit freine-the burner, may pass between them.
A metallic chain, e, extends from the lower end of the "wire O to the ltopof the metallic bell C. n.
The arm or lever I has a heavy handle or wcight,'e, fastened on it. By 'taking hold of this handle and raising it, so as not `only t0 turn the block or movable part of the stopcock ou its stem, but to lift thebell or hollow cone off the vulcanite frustum, communication with the burner will. be opened, so as to suplply it with gas, provided gas be in the cour duit.- At the same time a current of ele :ctricity will be generated, and 'a spark will pass from' one of the knobs to the other, and through the current of .gas flowing' from the burner, and will intlame it, the knobs being arranged relatively to the burner inA manner as represented. l v After having lighted or set re'to his cigar, or employed the gas-ame-for any otherpurpose, thel person should restore the bell to place on the vnlcanite cone onfrustum, and
'the handle should be allowed to drop, and
thereby turn the stop-cock cut-'off orfblock Gr, so, as to stop the do wage of gas to the burner,
and thereby extinguish the flame. Thus, with this apparatus, gaswill onlybe consumed when j requiredfor use. l f y I herel- `make no claim to the combination of 4a generator'of electricity and an electriceir-v cuit with a gas-burner; nor do Ijherein claim the subject of the Patent No. 26,964, granted to me on January 21,1860; nor do I 'claim the application of the weighted lever to the burner and gas-cockiprovided-with ale'xiblesupply: tube. f
What I do claim as my invent-ion is as follows, viz: l
l. The combination of the friction electrical generator, current devices M 0, and insulamrs EN. substantially as described, withjthe Iovelr the gas-burner H, gas-cook and oon tnc'al circuij; with the eletloal-exoit-er'or bou duib- K. as ser; forth. v .0, so as to be movable'with itA from and to the 2; Aigo, the combination of a, exible gz'alssff` :vulcanico frust-um A, or its Aequivvggnvleut, when conduitor hose, L, withthe gas-burner H, gasthe latter is 'stationary in position.
