IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR. LIGHTING GAS BY ELECTRICITY.

In the form in which it is represented in the drawings the apparatus is for the purpose of lighting a cigar. A block, G, provided with two prongs, a lextended from it in manner' as represented,

turns freely on the stem, and with the stem constitutes a gascock.

From one side of the block a gas-burner,- H, extends, and fromI the opposite side of4 the block a lever or weighted arm, I, is projected.

It is intended that a iiexible or india-rubber tube or hose for the conveyance of gas into the stopcock shall be applied to and sogas to open knob, c, is afxed, an insulator, N, of vlllcanite,'being `fixed to the opposite sideof the burner.

The arm or lever I has a heavy handle or wcight,'e, fastened on it. By 'taking hold of this handle and raising it, so as not `only t0 turn the block or movable part of the stopcock ou its stem, but to lift thebell or hollow cone off the vulcanite frustum, communication with the burner will. be opened, so as to suplply it with gas, provided gas be in the cour duit.- At the same time a current of ele :ctricity will be generated, and 'a spark will pass from' one of the knobs to the other, and through the current of .gas flowing' from the burner, and will intlame it, the knobs being arranged relatively to the burner inA manner as represented. l v After having lighted or set re'to his cigar, or employed the gas-ame-for any otherpurpose,thel person should restore the bell to place on the vnlcanite cone onfrustum, and

'the handle should be allowed to drop, and

thereby turn the stop-cock cut-'off orfblock Gr, so, as to stop the do wage of gas to the burner,

and thereby extinguish the flame.
