Letters .Patent No. 94,762, dated September 14, 1869.
IMPROVED BLT-FOR TRUNK-TRAYS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known thatI, ROBERT HCMURRAY, of the city and county of Washington, Districtof Columbia, have invented a new and improved -Bolt for Trays of Trunks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front or plan view.
Figure 2 is a vertical section, as indicated by the line :1c-x of iig. l.
Figure 3 is aview representing a piece of sheetmetal, cnt to a size and shape to form box and hands for holding spring and bolt to plate.
Like letters in the different figures of the drawings indicate like parts.
My invention consists- First, in providing the plate of the bolt with a box containing a spiral spring, in combination with a lip, i
so constructed with the bolt as to project within said box over the top of spring, so that when pulling the bolt back while closing the lid of the tray, the'spring, by" the pressure of said lip thereupon, will cause the holt to shoot into its propel` place, and retain it there without the liability'oi` the lid coming open by the slipping down ofthe bolts ordinarily used.
Second, in a bolt for trays oi trunks, the bolt provided with a leather iasteneiy'having a button-hole in combination with a button or headed pin attached to the plate, so that when pulled back it may be held while in that position by fastening the leather to the button or pin.
I construct my bolt as follows:
A is the plate, provided with screw-holes, by which it is fastened to the lid of the tray. e B is the bolt, of sheet-inetal, which is provided with a slot, having the lip a so cut and formed at the upper end thereof, as to project out at right angles from the face of the bolt.
C isthe box, and 4 I) D are the bands, which'are made in one piece, being cut to the proper size and shape, as seen in ti 3.
gThe box is made by turning up the 'edges b b and spaces e e, which form the sides and ends of' the box, the bands being properly shaped to lit over the bolt.
A spiral spring, d, is then placed in the box, and the bolt secured to the plate by the bands 'being riveted thereto on either side of the bolt, the lip a thereof being. within the box, over, and on the top of. the spring.
The edges of the box, a portion ofthe way up from the lower end, lit within the slot of the bolt, which slot keeps them from spreading out.
E is the leather fastenen'which is riveted to the end of the bolt, and provided, a little below the rivet, wit a button-hole, e. n,
Attached at the end of the plate is the button or headed pin F.
The spring keeps the bolt out, and in closing the lid of the tray, it must be pulled down by the leather fastener, and if desired to hold it in 'that position, the hole of the leather is slipped over the button or pin. (See its operation in red lines in lig. l.)
I contemplate making a box ou theunder side of the plate, as it may be in the way or may not present so nice a nish by being on the front, as may be deemed best. In that event, I would form the box from the plate, instead of the manner herein described, having the lip of the bolt turned or bent the other way, orI may form the box separate from the plate, and rivet it to the under side, or in any manner that may be most practicable for holding the spring.
Having thus fully described my invention,
That I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The box C, with bands D D, formed from one piece of sheet-metal for enclosing spiral spring d, and for fastening bolt B to plate A,substantially as described.
l 2. The plate A, with button or headed piu lh, and bolt, with fastener E and lip a, formed at the upper end of slot, in combination with box C, constructed substantially as described.
R. MCMURRAY.
Titnesses J ns. H. BUoKLsY, C. H. SMITH.
