BORDER FOR SIDE-WALL REGISTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1910.
Application filed .VTuly 24, 1908. Serial No. 445,169.
1o all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FLOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Borders for Side-fall Registers, of which the following` is a specication.
This invention relates to airregisters adapted for installation in walls of buildings. It affords improved facilities for setting and maintaining in place, means being provided to adapt its securing devices to wall members of different distances apart, it avoids the use of blocking between it and the frame and joists of a wall, and it is so constructed as to present a good appearance.
W hen read in connection with the description herein, the details of construction and arrangement of parts contemplated by the invention will be apparentfrom the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein a preferable embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
Like reference-chaincters refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawing, of which- Figure l is a side view; and Fig. 2 is a bottom view.
ril`he border includes a box-like frame 3,
One end of the border is held in place in a wall by its engagement with sleeve 5. In order to secure the other end of the border in place between joists in a wall and to relieve the sleeve of the weight of the border and to allow for joists of varying distances apart, laterally-extending brackets' 11 are employed. Each of these brackets is formed with a portion 12 arranged to lie along the exterior surface of the border and having a slot 13 therein for reception of a screw or bolt 1/1. The bolt passes through the border and is arranged when loosened to permit the bracket to be extended or retracted with respect to the border and when tightened to maintain the bracket in adjustec position. By this means, the brackets may be adjusted laterally7 to the distance apart of the joists or other wall members between which the border is to be set. Each bracket is formed with a portion l5, extending substantially at right angles to portion 12, and having one or more apertures for passage of screws or nails 16 to attach the bracket to a joist or other wall member. In thus setting the border between joists `such as indicated by 17 in the drawing, it is so placed that the outer surface of the lath and plaster structure 18 of the wall will about coincide with the line of meeting of the frame 3 and its molding 6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A register-border' comprising a frame, a fia-nge projecting inwardly of the opening of the frame, and ay reinforcing member fixed on and extending longitudinally of said flange and havingan aperture adapted to receive the securing means of a register.
JOHN FLOOD.
