Be it known that I, HARRY J. GUTTMAN,

a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to tables, and particularly to tables adapted for use as work benches.

The objects of my invention are to provide an improved collapsible table; to provide an improved table which admits of tightening the top members, such as boards, if they should shrink, or to maintain the top form ing members, of whatever material, together, and to hold them together to prevent cracks from making their appearance; to provide a special and highly useful improved pedestal for receiving table-forming boards or other material, and for keeping the same always tight, thus preventing the formation of cracks which gather dust, and which are a nuisance in other ways.

To the foregoing and other useful ends, my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of the table pedestals, the top being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.

The pedestal proper A consists of a suit-` ably shaped and constructed frame having the legs 2 and 3 terminating in suitable feet 4: adapted for securing the frame A. This frame may be of cast or wrought iron, or other suitable material. Gn its upper side the frame A is provided with a permanently Xed top rest 5 to which a suitable board 6, or other sup orting member, may be secured by bolts 173. On each side of this rest 5 is loosely secured a head 8 to each of which an additional board 9 is securely attached. These heads 8 are each provided with a slot 10 for permitting the bolt 11 to be fastened to the frame A, which bolt, when loosened, permits the head to slide back and forth. Upon the frame A there is provided the lugs 12 through which suitable tightening and loosening bolts 13 pass and engage the heads 8, as shown. Vith this arrangement it will be seen that the boards 6 and 9 may be kept close together,

or they may be separated, or some closed and some separated, if desired. Also, the table or bench may be very quickly and conveniently taken apart.

It will be seen that the pedestal is provided at its top with an integral center support 5, and with adjustable side supports 8, whereby the side boards 9 of the table top may each be adjusted toward and away from the center board 6, which latter is secured to the pedestal. Thus the table can be enlarged or reduced in area without disturbing the center section of the top. The sections 9 are secured to the adjustable supports 8, in the manner explained. The boards forming the table top are all secured in place by bolts which extend through slots in the supports 5 and 8, as shown and described. These slots permit adjustment of the top of the table to compensate for unequal expansion or contraction of the boards 6 and 9.

Vhat I claim as my invention is :-A

1. A work-bench having a plurality of parallel transverse pedestals, clamping jaws slidable on the top of each pedestal, and a sectional top for said bench, adapted to be clamped between said jaws to form one rigid structure.

2. A bench pedestal comprising a top receiving channel, a sectional top in said channel, and means comprising adjustable clamps on each side of said channel, and means cooperating therewith, for widening the channel at either side or at both sides thereof.

3. A bench pedestal comprising a top receiving channel, a sectional top in said channel, and means comprising adjustable clamps on both sides of said channel, and means cooperating therewith, for widening one side and narrowing the other side thereof.

4. In a table, an upright pedestal, a center support integral therewith, adjustable supports disposed at opposite sides of said integral support, and a sectional table top secured to said supports, said adjustable supports interposed between the pedestal and table top.

5. In an extensible table or bench, an upright pedestal, a center support integral therewith, adjustable supports disposed at opposite sides of said integral support, and a sectional table top secured to said su ports, said adjustable supports provide with means for compressing the table to edgewise without disturbing the integra center ports.

6. In a table adapted more particularly for use as a work bench, an upright pedestal, l

a center supportintegral therewith, adjustable supports disposed at opposite sides of lsaid integral support, a sectional table top secured to said supports, and screws adapted and applied for operating the said adjustable supports, one for each support, whereby the vcombined area of said supports may be varied at will without disturbing the integral center support, each section of the top being supported by and secured to one of said supports.

7. In a table, a sectional top therefor, .means for engaging the outer edges of the outer sections of the top, and adjusting .means whereby the sections are compressed edgewise to insure a smooth and unbroken .upper Vsurface therefor, said adjusting means comprisinghorizontally movable devices for each side of the table, those of one side being movable independently of those at Ythe other.

8. In a table, a sectional top therefor, means for engaging the outer edges of the outer sections of the top, and adjusting means whereby the sections are compressed edgewise to insure a smooth and unbroken upper surface therefor, comprising an individual support for each section of the top, having provisions -for relativermovement between said supports.

9. In a table, a sectional top therefor, means for engaging the outer edges of the Youter sections ofthe top, adjusting means of said middle support, also having longi- 1 .tudinal slots therein, means for actuating said adjustable supports, a sectional table top secured upon said supports by boltseX- tendinoF through said slots, and means on said acjustable supports for engaging the outer edges of the outer sections of the table top to compress the latter edgewise.

In a table or 4work-bench, a sectional table top, a pedestal, a centersupport for the tabletop, said support being rigidly connected with said pedestal, and an adjustable support disposed at each side of said rigid support, the support at one side being adjustable independently of the support at the other side, and vice versa, whereby the M said sectional top lmay be widened at one -side and narrowed at the other, or vice versa, substantially as described.
