JOCHAN KUCZYNSKI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF TO MARTIN J. POCIOSK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PADLOCK.
Application led February 6, 1909, Serial No. 476,351.
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JocHAN KUczYsnr, a subject of Austria, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in padlocks, and has for its objects to provide a construction that will increase the diiiiculty of opening the same without an intimate knowledge of the details of the structure.
A further object is to protect the keyhole from rain and snow.
A further feature of my invention consists in a three pronged sliding shackle and a plurality of sets of tumblers adapted to engage the prongs to prevent withdrawal of the shackle.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features, and in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims following the description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the lock. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the assembled lock. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the key.
Like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 6 denotes a easing having a removable side-plate, 7, and shackle openings, 8, through the upper end. A lower portion of the casing is less in cross-section than the upper portion. A removable shell, 9, having pin-recesses, 10, 10, incloses part of the casing and covers the key-hole in the lower end thereof.
The numeral, 11, designates a sliding shackle having short prongs with'notches, 12, therein near the ends thereof and a longer prong with notches, 13, therein near the end thereof.
There is provided what is termed long tumblers, 14, pivoted at 15, and spring pressed by blades, 16, each secured at one end to post 17. There is also provided what is termed short tumblers, 18, each pivoted at Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 21, 1910.
Renewed November 10, 1909. Serial No. 527,309.
19, and each having a toggle link, 20, pivoted to blade 21, which has a key-spindle, 22, slidable through an aperture in shield 23, which is adapted to guard the lock mechanism from injury by anything inserted through the key-hole.
The lateral spring-blades, 24, each has one end disposed between the inner wall of the case and the post, 25, and each spring carries a pin, 26, slidable in aperture, 27, through the wall of the casing. A rigid bar, 2S, apertured to receive the pin, 26, therethrough, has a wire, 29, attached to its lower end and secured to a releasing blade, 30, having it-s free end 31, bent at an angle to its body portion.
At the lower end of the casing there is a triangular key-hole, 32, and to receive the triangular end, 33, of the key-stem, shown in Fig. 4.
To prevent entire removal of the shackle there is a pin, 34, through the long prong of the same.
In use and operation, when it is desired to remove the shell, 9, for the purpose of unlocking the padlock, the releasing blade, 30, is pushed or pulled upwardly sufficient to draw the lower end of the bar, 28, inwardly and thus withdraw the pin, 26, from the pin recess, 10, when the shell may be removed and the key-hole, 32, exposed. lhen the triangular portion, 38, of the key is inserted in the key-hole, 32, and pushed against the spindle, 22, which is slidable in an aperture in shield, 23, the blade, 21, is moved upwardly and the lower ends of the short tumblers are caused to approach each other and the long ends of the short tumblers made to recede from each other and in so doing contact or interfere with the long arms of the long tumblers and thereby swing the tumblers out of engagement with the shackle, when it may be withdrawn as far as the pin, 34, will permit.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a padlock, in combination, a casing, a sliding shackle having lateral notched prongs and a centrally disposed longer prong oppositely notched, and a plurality of sets of pivoted tumblers adapted to engage the prongs to prevent withdrawal of the same.
2. The combination, in a padlock, of a casing, a sliding shackle having a plurality of notched prongs, a long tumbler and a short tumbler in contact with and for movement of the long tumbler in one direction, means to urge the long tumbler into engagement With the shackle, and means to swing the tumblers out of engagement With the shackle for unlocking purposes.
3. The combination, in a padlock, of a casing having a removable shell, means for securing the shell in position, a sliding shackle having a plurality of notched prongs, and a plurality of sets of tumblers adapted to automatically engage with the prongs to prevent Withdrawal of the same.
4;. The combination, in a padlock, of a casing, a sliding shackle having a plurality of prongs, adouble set of pivoted tumblers to engage the pron-gs to prevent Withdrawal of the same, one set of the tumblers being spring actuated, means to impart movement to the tumblers, and a bitless key to operate said means.
5. The combination, in a padlock, of a casing having a removable shell, means for securing the shell inposition on the casing, means for releasing the shell for removal, a
sliding shackle having a plurality of notchedv prongs, a plurality of spring-actuated long tumblers and a plurality of pivoted short tumblers each for engagement with the v shackle, means to give movement to the short tumblers, and means to operate said means.
6. The combination, in a padlock, a casing having an aperture through each side-Wall, a spring controlled pin slidably disposed in each aperture, and a removable shell With recesses to receive the ends of the pins to secure the shell in position, means to Withclraw the pins from the recesses, a sliding shackle having a plurality of notched prongs, a plurality of spring pressed pivoted long tumblers and a plurality of pivoted short tumblers each for engagement With the shackle, means to transmit motion to the short tumblers and a key.
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
JocHAN KUoZYNsKI.
